TRENT Barrett’s concerns about unbalanced penalty counts appear to carry some weight, but the stats don’t support Ricky Stuart’s claims.

If the NRL ladder was based on winning penalty counts, Manly would be dead last by a long way.

But the Sea Eagles have somehow overcome being the team with the most unfavourable run with the referees this season to sit in sixth place and within touching distance of the all-important top four.

Fox Sports Stats show Barrett’s men have won just two penalty counts from their 20 matches this season. Their 10 per cent win rate is easily the worst of any club.

Confirms my conspiracy theory. The NRL don't want Manly to succeed they want us gone. This added to them jumping on any band wagon they can to smear us. The Commission should all be sacked they don't deserve the huge salaries they receive. Please tell me what have they achieved? Gallop had already all but negiatuated the telecast deal. They have done sweet FA!

Proof on show, relieving to see. Also good to see we aren't using it as an excuse and falling away due to it with the side ever so close to the top 4

And ironically the Roosters won their last premiership with a forward pass that could be seen from the moon.

But I get what you are saying.🙂
You're right. The most penalised team all year and then nearly perfect discipline in the GF? Wtf?
That was the SBW year. As soon as they were in and the opposition was Manly the NRL decided to make the fairytale happen.
Bunch of tossers.
And James Maloney I haven't forgiven you for pulling Wolfie's hair. you plonker!

...
Overall, Manly have conceded 133 penalties this season, equal with Melbourne as the most of any club, yet have only been awarded 106.

Barrett denied his players had a discipline problem on the field as he’s guided the Sea Eagles to 11 wins.

“No, I don’t think so,” Barrett said.

“Some referees referee teams differently.

“It feels at times that we do get harshly scrutinised by referees, yeah.

“The penalties are across the board and we don’t seem to get the 50-50s this year. If there is a glaring area where we’re poor, we would certainly work on it.

“All we say about the referees and penalties is that they’re consistent. Consistent for both sides.

“Look, it’s not something I put a big focus on but we want our players to be disciplined.”

Manly won’t be able to lose penalty counts against top-two sides Melbourne and the Sydney Roosters in the next two rounds and expect to win.

The Sea Eagles’ coaching staff were last night breaking down the exact on-field areas where penalties were occurring.

“In terms of winning penalty counts, it definitely helps if you’re on the right end,” Barrett said.

Melbourne sit atop the NRL competition ladder despite having won only six penalty counts this season. That is still four more than the Sea Eagles, their opponents at AAMI Park this Sunday afternoon.

In fact, the bottom four teams with losing penalty counts are inside the top eight — Sydney Roosters, Melbourne, Parramatta and Manly.

Its actually 2 from 18 (taking into account the 2 byes). That means we shoot up to winning 11% of the penalty counts this season.....that's much better.

The one penalty thar ****s me most is inside the 10. For a decade when manly fire up and have a team inside there own 10 on 3rd tackle there is always a penalty. Never misses. Its scripted. Its a betting mans sure thing

Was expecting it to go the other way last week when the goons had us pinned. Nah
Carry on dragons , good line speed.

We do not get much from the referees. Even in home games, we don't win penalty counts. It is frustrating when you see our team penalised for things that our opponents get away with. To win 11 games has been really good. This is character building and it's true that discipline needs to improve its all a learning curve.

Manly has lost penalty counts for as long as I can recall. It is all part of the hate-Manly mystique, no ref would ever allow themselves to be accused of favouring us.

Especially when you can apparently get up from a tackle, judo throw your tackler on the ground and then start throwing elbows and not even get a sin bin.

Or take a guy out of a play and have a linesman's call for a sin bin overruled.

All because you're playing against Manly.

The script marches on.

I will re-iterate my point that I am becoming more and more certain that the way that the NRL seems to be running 'to script' seems to have really started in earnest in 2013. The same year the Greenberg took up a position there.

There was some stats I saw this year or last and that is that the teams in the top 8 are the most penalized teams and have been for the last 10 years or so. So as long as we make the finals it shouldn't really matter anymore because they won't blow as many. Penalties cut in half does not have the same effect.

And ironically the Roosters won their last premiership with a forward pass that could be seen from the moon.

But I get what you are saying.🙂
Definitely from the International Space Station. There is a NASA recording of one of the US mission specialists on the Station exclaiming - "Hey we thought they were playing rugby (league), not American football!"

Not usually a stats man...but penalties do have a huge impact on game shifts.
Based on this and our massive salary cap deficit ....already a great effort in 2017.
Let's hope this refs start giving Manly a fair chop in these last rounds and maybe win a count in the finals....have noticed opposition having WAY more time on tackled players and thought I may have been simply 1 eyed - now I realise the hard cold facts - they are trying to f*** us over with the whistles yet again.

What lovely referees. They are training our team to be more disciplined. Better in defence. Better in attack. And most of all patient. We really don't need a coach with all the refs fast tracking us to another Premiership. This is great stuff.
