Manly captain Jamie Lyon says its not panic stations at Brookvale yet, but concedes the players let down coach Trent Barrett on his NRL debut.

Manly skipper Jamie Lyon has conceded his players need to make amends with coach Trent Barrett after embarrassing him on his NRL debut.

Barrett was left scratching for answers over the weekend after his new-look Sea Eagles outfit crashed 28-6 to Canterbury at Brookvale Oval on Friday night in the NRL's opening round.

Lyon labelled the performance, in Barrett's first match as a head coach at NRL level, as "unManly-like" and said his team needed to turn things around very quickly.

"It is not panic stations but we need to be a lot better than that," Lyon said at the Sea Eagles' Narrabeen base on Monday.

"We expected a lot more from us. We know we can be better and we have to be calm about it moving forward and fix what we have to fix.

"It is not the end of the world but we have to change straight away."

"It was, very disappointing the basic things let us down, the dropped balls and the defence wasn't where it should have been."

Asked if the team had let Barrett down, Lyon replied: "We did there we did, we had a good pre-season and it was a sour way to start the year. But there is no use going on about it, we have to concentrate on the Tigers this week."

New halves combination Daly Cherry-Evans and Dylan Walker failed to gain much traction against the Dogs. Lyon stressed the need for patience with the pair.

"Just by playing games together is going to improve them as a partnership, they have plenty of talent between them, it won't take too long for them to put it together," he said.

"It's hard to get some continuity there when we keep dropping the ball coming out of our own line, it is hard for them to do anything there."

Manly meet Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Monday week in the NRL's second round.

We have been average to poor defensively for years, the one thing I was hoping to come out of all of this change is a team that had some pride in their defense. That's what needs to be fixed immediately.
