Manly
legend Cliff Lyons has backed Sea Eagles young gun Albert Hopoate to be a bigger success than his father, John.

Albert, 18, who suffered an ACL injury in SG Ball last year, is expected to make his first-grade debut this season.

The younger brother of Bulldogs ace Will, has already impressed in the junior ranks — scoring this epic try for Manly.

He attracted interest from rugby union and a host of NRL clubs, before he committed to following in his father’s footsteps at Brookvale.

If that wasn’t enough, the prized fullback is lifting more than some of Manly’s strongest and toughest forwards.

“He looks like he’s going to be a very good player,” Manly backrower Joel Thompson told Fox Sports’ James Hooper recently.

“He’s already bench pressing and squatting more than me in the gym.”

And with Tom Trbojevic injured for the first two rounds and Dylan Walker stood down on assault charges, Hopoate could get his chance in the Sea Eagles backline sooner rather than later.

“Albert won’t be far away this year,” Lyons told Foxsports.com.au.

“I played with John — the big daddio.

“Albert’s speed and strength is really good, and he has a great ability to read the play.

“He’s probably better than his dad.”

Lyons is pleased to see Des Hasler return to Brookvale after the club slumped to 15th last season — narrowly avoiding the wooden spoon.

The pair played alongside each other in the 80s and 90s and Lyons believes his old teammate can restore Manly to their former glory — and make the finals this year.

“I think bringing him back is a good thing,” Lyons explained.

“It’ll put a bit of buzz in the place, he’s very complex and anal in what he does but that brings the best out of you.

“He was very competitive as a player in training. And as a coach he’s an innovator and very creative.

“Hopefully we’ll be in the eight, it depends on injuries of course.”

Manly begin their 2019 NRL season away to the West Tigers next Saturday.

Top NRL rookies set to light up the competition in round one

Reuben Garrick (Sea Eagles)

The 21-year-old flyer is set to benefit from the untimely injury to Tom Trbojevic, with a debut for the Sea Eagles in Round one.

Garrick played the last two seasons for the Dragons’ Intrust Super Cup side scoring 13 tries in 27 games, but was stuck behind the likes of Euan Aitken, Kurt Mann, Tim Lafai, and Zac Lomax.

Des Hasler has big raps on the centre, but with Moses Suli and Brad Parker set to get first crack in the middle, Garrick will have to bide his time on the wing for now.

Briton Nikora (Sharks)
Dylan Brown (Eels)
Corey Allan (Rabbitohs)
Adam Keighran (Warriors)

Big wraps from a legend for Albert.

For the life of me I can’t see with all the wraps Garrick is getting why they wouldn’t start him in his natural talent position of centre. It’s not as though Parker and Suli are incredibly experienced players with great form behind them.

I hope he’s not parked outside Suli. Won’t touch the ball.

. . . unless he retrieves it from a Suli knock-on.

Whew. Sure glad he can bench press a lot, the benchmark for rating players football ability these days
Who said that the ability to bench press a lot was the bench mark for rating players these days ?
What it a coach , a Player ? Who ?

Seems strange. Suli is a winger only imo and Parker a centre only. Maybe its just how they are trained well between the 3.

I thought winning the sprint races was the benchmark.
I seem to recall young Croker getting huge wraps on his running ability.

Our captain used to be whoever could wolf down the most chicken burgers at Salty Rooster in one sitting and now that’s closed, it’s a bench press-off because a good captain should have a big set of chesticles...
Wait... I don’t remember big Gorgeous George being captain?!?!

If you find that preseason article you will see that Croker was praised for being one of the leaders in the squad for his fitness and not for wining sprint races against players like Walker , Turbo, DCE, Uate , and Tom Wright .
At the end of the day Croker was placed in the development squad by Des where he belongs .
Des picked Cust in our NRL top squad and I think we have a winner here

Let’s not forget it’s the media pundits selecting these sides not necessarily the coach.

I have faith in the coaching staff to know who’s the best player for the job and to be honest I don’t expect to see both Parker and Suli named in the centres .

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit to see Garrick in the centres.

I imagine though we are still stuck with Suli and Parker somewhere given no Turbo.

Parker is a solid and good defender and i think that's where he adds value
From what I have seen Parker and Suli have 0ne things in common that is they are both not gifted with fast muscles fibres to unable them to be classic super fast backs . Suli at 20 and still maturing and developing biggest asset is his power game . He lacks finess with skills in his passing game but that can be taught where as the other attributes are gifted as dynamic power and speed are part of a players DNA .
When Parker made his debut in the NRL a few years ago against the Warriors giant Manu Vatuvei he impressed with his solid and reliable and courageous display . Since then he has been sidelined with injuries and held back in confidence to develop further from a sht coach and an under performing team culture At best I think Parker as you say @Dan will be a solid player.

Double whoosh !!

Did you watch the last round of 2018 Danny?
Was like a defender free zone out wide.
He does not t have the physical attributes to match blokes like Masters and Mitchell.
All the effort in the world doesn’t help when you are totally outgunned for strength and pace.
