Lodge, you Monster

When he plays tough he gets a hard time … and when he plays soft he gets a hard time !

Go figure!
Doing a textbook hip drop tackle which has apparently torn an opponents MCLl ligament is not tough, he played fine apart from that. The suspension that is going to follow and hurt the team is why I'm giving the halfwit a hard time.

Text book hip drop you say????.. have you ever played the game

Just saying
Yeah I have.

And yeah it's textbook. His feet left the ground with his arms around the ball carriers waist, then he fell onto his opponents lower legs with his body weight.

I think you're misunderstanding my point, you can argue the game has gone soft elsewhere but I'm saying it dumb because they've explicitly been told and shown examples of what NOT to do by the NRL - and he's gone and done that exact thing.

I'm annoyed that he broke a rule that's going to cost himself and Manly dearly at the judiciary. I'm not arguing the lack of nuance applied to judging it or whatever. He's just done a horrible tackle and given the NRL have been waiting for someone to make an example out of them, especially considering injuries factor into grading, suspensions, etc.

I don't think it was a hip drop. He was lying on the ground and pulled Smith down. He didn't use his weight to pull him down and land on his legs. No penalty given after the bunker took a look and correctly so. If they go back on this because of a media ****storm then they are hypocrites......oh hang on a minute

The following sets out the key indicators whether a charge is to be considered:

  1. Grip – the defending player has a grip on the attacking player (one hand or two)
  2. Rotate – the defending player uses that grip and swings or rotates their body to a position behind or to the side of the ball carrier
  3. Drop – the defending player then drops their body weight directly onto the attacking player's legs (as opposed to their body weight landing on the ground first to absorb most of the impact)

I did not think it was a hip drop at the time and replays don't change my mind.
His body did not come down on his legs,he started the tackle around the knees and it was unfortunate that Smiths leg rolled as Lodges arms came down the leg,no use of Lodges body to pull him down apart from the arms.

I'll go back and rewatch it sometime because everyone seems to have the opposite opinion, and it's more than likely I'm wrong if that's the case.

At the time I thought he was put on report for a hip drop tackle, and when I saw the brief replay I thought he was going for 10 or more. I was then so was surprised nothing further than the report came of it.

Perhaps my eyes and initial view deceive me.

Even The Cheese himself is saying it wasn’t a hip drop

I really didn’t think that was a “textbook hip drop” from Lodge at all and clearly the ref AND the bunker didn’t think so either back on replay. No penalty and wasn’t placed on report. Like I feel really sorry for Smith because he’s been out a year and this was his first game back, but I just don’t think Lodge deserves suspension just because he got injured in that tackle.

Wouldn’t mind seeing another replay but as things stand I thought it was a fine tackle and Smiths leg was just caught in an awkward position. Anyways wishing a smooth recovery for him.

Totally wrong.. he was around the legs the whole time.. the attacking player was going forward and the defenders above Lodge twisted Smiths upper torso the opposite way to the direction of Lodges momentum.
Lodge's body slides along the ground.. it couldn't disappear and yes it landed partly on Smith's ankle but he never tackled him around the waist, never did he have both feet off the ground and never does he slide down the back or side of Smith's legs.
Was cleared by the bunker and the ref.

It's a contract sport players are and will always get injured it doesn't automatically mean the defender completed and illegal tackle.

Watch the game and comment on the play not the player.

In fact Lodge made 5 or 6 of the very same tackle..below the knees in the match.. he's defence was excellent today.

Just you watch whether you think it’s a hip drop or not. Here comes the Manly loading with a little bit of Lodge topping.

Smith doesn't think the tackle is an issue
