Lodge, you Monster

The brief phone call that ended Matt Lodge’s hopes of a Wayne Bennett reunion

Matt Lodge was confident that he was headed to South Sydney for a Wayne Bennett reunion, but one brief call blew up that plan and forced the NRL enforcer to make a surprising career pivot.

Matt Lodge has revealed how failed moves to South Sydney and St George Illawarra has bizarrely resulted in a surprise return to Manly that won’t begin until May.
Lodge had been in serious talks with the Rabbitohs, then the Dragons, only for both to fall over, which prompted him to pursue two boxing bouts over the next two months.

It was the culmination of an uncertain summer that began with working three days a week in construction and ended in a fresh two-year deal with the Sea Eagles.

The NRL enforcer sits down with Tyson Jackson to discuss how he got here.

HOPPING MAD

The off-season had barely started when Lodge, who had thought he had finished his time at Manly, was linked with Wayne Bennett and South Sydney.

The Rabbitohs were believed to be in the market for a front-rower following the departure of prop Tom Burgess, and a long-term injury to Junior Tatola.

Lodge, who had been coached by Bennett at Brisbane, was keen on a reunion.

But in a situation which still frustrates him to this day, Lodge was told by club official to not sign anywhere through November and December.

Just before the turn of the new year, a quick phone call all but killed that scenario.

“I had sat out of this pre-season because I had conversations. I thought it was 99 per cent over the line, and I got told to tell my family (I was coming),” Lodge told this masthead.

“Then I just had a quick call saying, ‘It’s not happening’, and he hung up. Obviously disappointing because I didn’t get paid for that couple of months and this is my livelihood.”

FIGHTING FIRE

Still clubless through the new year, the 29-year-old had all but secured a move to St George Illawarra, which would’ve been the sixth club of his career.

After initially being told he would be offered a multi-year deal, it was believed all they could table was a train-and-trial deal.

However, Lodge is adamant he was only ever tabled a $300,000 one-year contract by the club.

“I was going to have to live in a hotel four nights a week,” he said.

I have four kids under seven, I’m building a place, it was getting too hard to move down there for eight months and then in eight months time look for a new place.

“An eight-month deal wasn’t long enough for me to ship a whole family down and pull them out of school.”

Lodge said the train-and-trial money wouldn’t have even covered his fuel had he stayed in Sydney.

“If I’m ever doing that … I have done it in Manly and that’s because it suits me, it’s around the corner from home,” he said.

“I have a family now, four kids, it needs to be sustainable. I have bills to pay.”

Although choosing to go in a different direction, Lodge believes the Dragons will improve under Shane Flanagan, and holds no ill will towards the club.

GLOVES UP

Lodge literally took matters in his own hands, negotiating a contract renewal at Manly that will see him tied to the club until the end of the 2026 season.

The saga allowed him to lock in two fights before returning to the NRL in Rd 10.

Lodge will be on a humbling $1200 a week, a considerable step down from the multi-year deal he initially thought he had from the Dragons.

“It was a very hard call sacrificing that amount of money to come back on a part time deal. Some people around me thought I was crazy,” Lodge said.

“I want to be at Manly, and that is why I did what I did.

It’s a unique contract, which at the end of the day has helped me supplement more income and help my family.

Taking part in his second fight through former boxer Ricky Colosimo’s Wanderer Promotions, Lodge is set to battle on the same day as the Las Vegas season opener.

Colosimo is hoping Lodge can challenge some of the best in Australian boxing, and build a reputation similar to former Australian heavyweight title challenger Paul Gallen.

“Matt is genuine about his boxing ambitions and takes it seriously, unlike the majority of the cross code athletes,” Colosimo said.

“Broadcast and stadium shows are just around the corner and people will be able to see Matt’s development on a larger scale.”

Colosimo is lining up a worthy heavyweight challenger for Lodge to fight on March 2nd at the Bella Vista Hotel, before he returns to the NRL after round 10.

"I want to be at Manly..." after literally saying he is only here because it is convenient...

Smfh.... minimum wage for an ageing and broken DV germ is still too much... even if a few players think he's "a good bloke"...

Relax man, it's just a footy player on a part-time deal. You should be happy he is fighting in March because you don't like him and he is going to get punched in the head. We're not turncoats, we're just adults with regulated emotions.
Just a side issue with Lodge being punched in the head - where do clubs sit these days when it comes to liability for possible CTE issues for players? We know only too well about player safety and there is now a greater emphasis on head injuries. So if a player is allowed to take up boxing and get beaten around the head, who is responsible for that? Lodge or the club?

I would’ve had more respect for him if he said “I couldn’t get a better deal like I hoped and regret saying what I did about minimum wage. I’ve come back with my tail between my legs and want to work hard to prove myself”

Instead he makes up a fanciful story to make it sound like he always wanted to stay. Please.

Scum and always will be scum.

In saying that, every rugby league team can use someone with a bit of scum.

Lodge... until 10 years later when he pulls a Perrett....

Seriously.. I'm over the whole Lodge issue.. frankly I don't care if his a good guy, scumbag, church goer, drug addict, family man or degenerate arse hole.. if he plays for the team and we win games that's all I care about.

This is footy we are talking about, 70% of the players are meat head thugs who are totally self absorbed dick heads who can't wait to knock another bloke senseless and brag about it, that's footy..

We all seem to forget or thankfully we're unable to really know the real side of many of the past stars we all worshipped, I met a few and they were complete f@#k wits, especially on the drink, but their fellow team mates thought their sh#t didn't stink.

So sick of modern social media and the perception of many fans who think players are or should be saints.

Yet we cheer so hard as one of our players runs over the head of an opponent or makes a tackle that we can hear in the grandstand.

Footy is footy a tough game played by a majority of tough headed d#$k heads, ask yourself how many of these guys have ambitions to be doctors, lawyers or even an accountant, very very few, mostly brainless athletes or dim witted bullies, Lodge is just another one in a huge line.

This is where we are a bit different.

There is the physicality in the game which I feel is different from issues off the park.

I would be interested at how you came up with 70% etc. even if this figure is accurate then there is a massive difference between someone who does it within the rules of a sport and someone who assaults people in a criminal fashion.

That is why the same people that could love Steve Matai but struggle to see someone like Lodge in our team.

Personally I would rather have a team of decent humans and if it means we do not win as often I am okay with that.

I like how in all of this the UK Super league options are silent because he can't get a visa there because of his past actions in the US.

Don't cry me a river mate when your options are limtited due to past actions. And don't use your kids as an excuse, that was a life choice most of us make as well.

^^^^^^^^
This...

I would rather Manly NOT be the team that prioritises winning to the point that we "give a 2nd chance" to people that are germs... its not even like he was in our system - which would still suck but be somewhat understandable...

Matt Lodge should NEVER have been given the opportunity to wear our colours...

Supplementary list, which these guys are on, and which replaced the development contracts, allow them to play all year now. No Round 11 restriction or whatever it was before.

Pretty sure the same goes for the train and trials too.
So... what's the point of top 30?

That is not a fair Assessment at All feathered friend
Infact it is a total Misconception

There have been Doctors who have been convicted of raping their patients
There have been Lawyers who have been convicted podophiles
There have been Accountants that have been convicted of fraud
Education does not give you a pass and honors in morals and integrity
Not all Doctors Lawyers , Accountant's , Athletes or Any one else is defined by the the few that do the wrong thing
The fact is that There are more Descent people living in society than the ones that are locked behind Bars

Footy is tough and it is played by courage's young men who put their body on the line for their club , their family , and their supporters .
They are young Men that have the discipline to train hard and managing their diet and put up with the media scrutiny . One fart and you make headlines.
It takes Great Character to be courageous , and Have Discipline
Footy players are far from Dickheads

Life gives All of us the opportunity to learn and grow from our mistakes
The Legal system convicts us as it should but people should not condemn us if we had paid the price and have done the time

Good people give People the opportunity to make amends and Become Better people
A world with without hope is a hopeless world to live in

How many of you would not give your son or daughter who have paid the price for their wrongs a second chance ?
