Lodge, you Monster

We have Guac, we have Toff and we have Tent... they are huge men that can play that "Alpha" role if it really is necessary... we also have Brown who is a natural Alpha but has given it away cause it just costs you penalties in todays vanilla NRL...
Guaca is a beast but he is on the edge, Toff and Tent they are good ball runners but lack that enforcement ability, need someone as that’s where you win the bigger games.

The ‘Alpha’ ‘enforcer’ and ‘aggressive’ tags are earned through efforts off the park, it is absolutely ludicrous. Maybe in the NRLW he earns those, but not in the NRL

He is lucky to even have a gig in the NRL after 3 clubs have had a look at him and quickly decided to move him on, one paying full money just to get him out of the joint, and then the next club send him back to reserve grade not to train with the top squad again. That’s says something, and he has the cheek to head into the front office and ask for more years than we are prepared to offer. Take the hint on the bloke

Only silver lining is that clubs immediately improve when he is out of them

I hear people talk about it a lot but personally I am not sure what the Alpha brings really... back in the day, sure...

In today's game players are gonna "follow" a guy that makes big metres or creates a lot of offloads every bit as much as they will a guy that goes the niggle or spends a bunch of time on the sideline cause he puts hits around blokes chins...

we need Tent to step up and be that guy that plays a Payne Haas type of role by playing big minutes and making big metres... and I think he can as this was easily his best season imo... I also think Sips can add a lot to our squad if he can recover from his leg injuries...

More the aggression is my take on the Alpha, like JFH from the Panthers and Leota to a lesser extent, Tent doesn’t have it in him to go after blokes and play with consistent aggression, bends the line and he could be up there with the best of them if he has an aggressive front rower with him.

Sipley his strength is running the ball, thought he was unlucky not to get on the pine over Alioia.

I figure Aloiai was signed to be the player you are talking about... but he is a failure...

Lodge may be an "Alpha" but he is just not that good... Brown is an "Alpha" but he cant play big minutes...

Getting someone that ticks ALL the boxes will be expensive (or lucky)

Yeh that’s why they signed Alioia, but you could count on two hands on how many times he has delivered playing the enforcer role.

There are a couple of young developing front row forward coming through and we need a mongrel to assist their development.

The sad reality that JWH was in our fold on the cusp of moving into firsts… up there in terms of lost talent.

He played 6 first grade games for Manly b4 he went to the Roosters.
Am I wrong in that judgement? To me, he was a much bigger loss than Queen Gutho, whom many bang on about. What could have been with JWH as our solid alpha male for the last decade…

Oh no I agree, losing JWH was probably our biggest ever loss of one of our juniors - well, our under 20's at least.

Hopefully the last we see of Lodge. His defence and effort was atrocious. Playing tag all night. Can you enforce with a tap / slap?

JWH… if he had of stayed then I reckon we win in 2013 on top of 2011. Beyond that though, I don’t think it would not have made much of a difference if the club went down the same path as it has done since Penn took control. We had AFB for a bit who is every bit as good as JWH and no success came of it

Intelligent well thought out response, AD. I take your point and very valid. I also agree it may not have made a huge difference. I also agree with the thrust of your point that it has not just been about our personnel but also a question around the club leadership right from the top.

Speaking about the Preacher, does anybody know what we are paying him. Just seems like he's not playing a lot of min these days. Hope it's not what we payed on his last contract ?

I scratch my head at Aloiai’s selection/extension.

Is he supposed to be our alpha forward/pack leader? If so, he’s never shown that quality.

Is he supposed to be that reliable, solid & consistent forward who carts the ball up & settles the play down for us? If so, he’s been erratic & makes too many mistakes (dropped balls, bad play the balls, etc) & gives away too many penalties.

I just don’t get what his value add is supposed to be 🤔
