Last night, against my better judgement, I threw caution to the wind .. and read some of the game thread ... was quickly reminded why I don't ..

The game was a disaster .. fact. ... and the general wisdom ran between 2 main camps ...

1) Certain individual players are shiitehouse and the missed tackle/try was the sole reason for our loss ..
2) Others present a studied account of missing players, ref's decisions, bad luck and 10 other considered reasons for the loss, that in any other week, if the same reasons were presented by our opposition, the same people slam as pathetic excuse making.

Yes, we were missing very important players ... but Canberra were also missing Papalii, Wighton, Whitehead, Nicoll-Klokstad, Curtis Scott, Horsburgh, George Williams etc ..

Simple fact is ... some games are just shiite and get away from you ... our fate was as good as sealed when Canberra had 11 out of 12 sets in a row on our line ... poor bloody Keppie tackled anything that moved, got flatfooted by a nippy halfback .. and people want to blame him ... good grief ..

Could our bench been used better, were the selections right, did players make mistakes ... yeah, nah, yeah, maybe, sorta ... welcome to footy, we win it is genius, lose and it's we need an investigation ... if footy was an exact science, Stephen Hawkins would be our halfback.

Just strap yourself in ... and get ready to do it all again next week ... Rip in Manly.

Thing is Woodsie, most teams have a core of good players who wont win you games but will do what's necessary to be competitive. Most of the Manly side is like that. Good players but without the key players they share the level of also run sides.

That's not to say some are not better than average and Manly has quite a few. I have a lot of time for Olakau'atu and Keppie in the forwards in particular, maybe Paseka if he is more consistent. Taupau always does his job. Jake tightens the defence and does some clever stuff. The two wingers are good but need the ball. The centres are OK, nothing special. Foran is fine if he has players around him that benefit from his passing.

But Manly will be an also ran side in my opinion without DCE and Turbo. They are the Fulton/Eadie combination that are the energy behind Manly's play. Add to that the rising talent of Schuster, and maybe if Fainu is available and still as clever, and you have a side that can compete with the best. But without the X Factor players DCE, Turbo and the rising Schuster, Manly are just one of the middle crowd in my opinion.

I think last night was a combination of having some big (easy) wins of late causing complacency & our leaders (DCE, Turbo & Jake) missing & therefore no one to marshall the troops & give everyone a good kick up the erse early on in the game to refocus.

After that, panic & fatigue set in.

At least we didnt give up completely & kept trying to mount comebacks but errors (due to fatigue & panic at the clock) stopped us from getting a roll on.

Lol I never delve into the game day thread but had quick browse earlier

There is 1 character in particular that loves to sink the boot in and Des must be sacked etc. Thought for a laugh I’d have a look at posting history, extremely active during and after the Newcastle game, 1 post at half time of the Titans games then unsighted again until last night ...

That game confirmed last night that we should be content to finish 6th; don't get bent out of shape when we lose matches. As long as we finish 6th and have the two Turbos, DCE, The Shoe and Al come finals time we'll give the top teams a scare.
Unlike Melbourne we need our best players available or else we are just a less-than-stellar side.

Can anyone seriously mount the case this year that having Wighton in their side is actually helping the Raiders? I dead set have not seen him do anything this year.

I said before the match that having Wighton out would actually help the Raiders. And tbh I think Frawley had a better game last night than anything Wighton has dished up all year.

You didn't use the word 'Suli' once in that speech? That's not easy to do, well done.

You may be the only smart man in Australia ... the other 25,804,499 people would probably be happy to have Jack Wighton in their team ..

Exactly mate. We all know how good this team can be when we get all the troops on the park and fire up. Yes, still not as consistent as melbourne week in week out, but lets see how we go when we play them in a few weeks and finals footy.

I just want to see us get to the finals with a full strength side and see how we go, how long as it been since that has happened.

Its shame we play the finals at night in damp conditions, we do really excel in dry weather footy. Wish we were more like AFL and played a lot of day finals matches. At least leading up to finals we have some big night matches at home against Parra and Melbourne. That is where we can see how much of a shake we are going to give this comp

We were bound to lose a couple games heading to finals, and I had a feeling we were going to lose last night.

The sky is not falling, all I will say is Suli marked his card last night and should never play first grade, and I was a big supporter of his. Lazy.

Haha I was thinking the exact same thing during the game after Ivan Henjak 2.0 earnt set after set for the raiders. Those repeat sets were the primary reason we lost.

I saw it differently, but to be fair Saab, Parker and Suli had 9 errors between them. Not good enough, but suspect a lot of that was due to fatigue.
Saab did jack so shouldn’t be fatigue unless knocking the ball dead over and over again counts as errors.
One of Parkers errors was not scoring the try.
Suli cost us at least one try off his head and potentially another one in attack.
So very costly on the scheme of things.

I don’t know how Garrick keeps getting off scot free for the Suli falcon that led to a try. Granted it looked bad for Moses and he could’ve made a play for it if he looked up, but he was doing his job blocking the defenders running through.

Garrick’s job was to catch the ball but he let it bounce just like he did several other times in the game costing us field position and putting us under pressure.

It’s like he was scared of the ball. Not good enoguh
