In the modern game, the starting prop is no longer a sign of seniority or competence, and the bench second string. Now a prop will play the role he (or she) is most suited to within the make-up of the team.

For example I believe BJ has recently played his best two games for us off the bench. Putting him there is not a demotion, simply a recognition of where his style is best utilised. And this may vary week to week based on the perceived strength or weakness of opposing packs.
