Keppie in Des' bad/ good books

Looked like Des pointed to Turbo is his angry speech too
Yes, but I thought Des was demanding the players give Turbo more support.
Hey, I could be wrong though and he was actually angry with all of them including Turbo...

Keppie was originally put in the back row against the Titans for a couple of reasons. First, Guac had been out for 5 weeks and was returning from injury so I think Des was playing it cautious which I can't blame him for. Second, it was to put a big bruiser type prop in front of David Fifita to try and intimidate him a bit. It largely worked, but was greatly helped by Harper doing a fantastic defensive job on Fifita.

Des then kept Keppie in the back row, despite naming him on the bench, for the game against the Tigpies and of course, we won that rather easily in the end. So Des pulled the same trick this week, named Guac to start and Keppie off the bench, but then swapped them around. Only this time it didn't work well at all down our right. Keppie had a below average first stint and things only got better out there when Guac came on.

TBH I fully expect Des to name the same one through seventeen this week against the Warriors. The only difference would be that now Guac has some match fitness, and given what we all saw yesterday with Des giving Keppie the spray from hell, Haumole will finally actually be in the run on side at kick-off.

If any forward is dropped for Siro to return, right now I would say that Sean Keppie is the leading candidate.

I have been a fan of Sipley for ages. He adds that leg drive and big body off the bench, no way he makes room for Siro IMO.

If Siro does make it back, I would hope dez would use him in short spells, as he has been so poor the last 2 years. Does not bend the line, or set up his out side man and these days is not very mobile and threatening. Still a solid player and good defensively, but not as good as Shuster or Quac as edge forwards.

My thoughts on to why Keppie didn’t get back on for a second stint.

The 1st try Penrith scored was set up by a big run by To’o from a kick return. To’o steps inside Harper and charges up the field. The inside defender of Harper was Keppie. I say Des did plenty of video on To’o this week and Keppie failed his assignment to cover inside of Harper in this case.

I seen no urgency from Keppie in cover and I bet my right nut that was on the tip sheet this week.

I also noticed Keppie was moved off the edge after this back into the middle in defence. Jake was defending on the edge while Keppie was on and would switch back in attack.

Im tipping Keppie is either on the bench this week or dropped for Sirro

I still wouldn't mind seeing Schuster or Siro (who does have the skills) used as a ball playing lock with Jake put into the front row rotation where he gets a break every now and then. Jake may have a big motor but with the speed of the game these days even he was buggered 60 minutes into yesterday. A rest either side of half time could do the world of good for him.

Yep I noticed that too. After the first try Jake was defending 3 in at 2nd row, Keppie was at prop and Aloiai was at lock roving the middle with Croker.

Keppie is just so rocks or diamonds at the moment. When rocks he is pretty quiet in attack with a few poor reads in defence and maybe some errors. When diamonds he is a heavy hitter in defence and really confronts the opposition forwards. Im very conflicted on his defence. Some weeks looks great (tits game) and some pretty poor and lazy

Sipley is better at providing energy and confrontation, and is far more consistent in his effort.

So if Siro comes back to the side, which I really don't want at the moment. I would definitely prefer that he takes Keppie's spot over Sipley's.

I like the idea of Jake having a rest. In SOO he is always one of the best blues out there, the pace of origin is what most NRL games are like now so it makes sense that he gets a spell with all the work he does.

Yeah need somebody a bit more mobile than Keppie on the edge now.. Guac needs to start there from here in.

Yep Jake doesn’t seem to have the gas in his tank for an effective 80. Would def spell him. Even put Cust in there at lock and just have play a Connor Watson type role.

Jake works his butt off so really unavoidable to show some fatigue , especially in a fairly up tempo game but still seems to be able to put in very reliably even if he is on for the full 80 . Shame that he split the pill close to the line , haven 't seen the replay of that but was he really that certain of scoring ? The Panthers were certainly under pressure regardless even if the next plays occurred so maybe a lost scoring opportunity .

On Kepie, did you see his eyes roll back in that jolting hit in the second half, the one ref wrongly placed the warrior on report for, that shot was ok by me, the knee sliding of the side of his head may have been more of an issue but nothing major, if you didn’t notice it, I think it’s worth a look if you can be bothered. He pulled of some pretty solid defenaive work today, well done Sean, keep up the work rate mate.

Yes he did play very well but he had a shocker start. Let in 2 very soft tries early on. He's gotta start much better than that. A work in progress and he will get much better. We have some great talent coming through but they need guys like Marty and Josh showing them the way.
