ManlyBacker

Winging it
Manly players were granted a rare audience with the NRL's richest major backer, Yevgeny Kaspersky.

Having recently extended his sponsorship deal with the Sea Eagles, the eccentric Russian tycoon - believed to be worth $900 million - wined and dined players and officials at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay during the week.

He regaled the players - including Jamie Lyon, Keiran Foran, Jason King and George Rose - with some cracking yarns in his broad Russian accent.

Legend has it that when his son was kidnapped, Kaspersky - a former security specialist with the KGB - rang the Russian president and son Ivan was returned unharmed the next day.

Onlookers were amused to find that the 46-year-old's drink of choice was a double-scotch on ice. ''We all expected him to order vodka,'' an attendee said.

In Russia, Manly sponsors you!

I like scotch, may I have some Mr Kaspersky?

I'm also 'close' to your home at the moment. Anyone you want me to visit? Just PM away!

Now all we need to do is fill him full of scotch and convince him that building us a new stadium is a good idea.

Interesting the pulled out of the melbourne demons after one contract but decided to stick with us. But then again we have given them some great exposure with battle of brookie and a premiership.

If we do go back to back we should push to have the game played in Moscow that would be great for the games development, it's already very popular there also imagine going on the WCC tour it would be a drunken vodka vest :)

Jesus, we've got our very own Abramovich. Hopefully Perry was able to exude a few more $$$ out of him.

true Cam, I see Melbourne are at the bottom too!! Great signing for our club! 3 Years is alot of peace of mind plus we are breaking even now.

I'm amazed. This guy is worth 900 million and he's personally meeting with the players and officials from our club.

I thought someone else with authority within Kaspersky would have set up the sponsorship we have now but he himself seems very much involved with it. Really glad to have him on board until 2015.

I wonder how much of a fan he is of Rugby League?

Does anyone else find it high amusing that a week after the club announced this there has been no mention of this in the telegraph. Funny that

They are working hard to find a negative spin to put on the story.

How good is it, hope he sticks around for another 10 or 20 years. Maybe some older off contract players can go finish their career in Russia where there is no salary cap. Just thinking out aloud. :)

Worth $900 million, you think he can have a word to a few KGB mates and get them to ADVISE other clubs CEO's to back off on Manly players.

Excellent result for the club. All the people involved should be congratulated.

Perry is outstanding in my opinion. Makes the really tough decisions, previous management may have not done, and turned around the $$$.

Moscow Eagles RLFC has a nice ring for a Russian team.

Btw for those asking Russia has a descent following in league 20k for a game (I **** you not).
A mate of mine has said if your a league player you can earn up to $200k a year at some clubs but you have to play both codes.
