Just a thought - key ingredient missing

This is just 1 factor that I feel reflects on giving away these BIG leads where you would expect us to hold on comfortably and it's happened many games in 2024..
As example, when we shot out to a healthy lead and they were on death row, a certain formula we lack, that the best teams use to dig the knife through the heart and twist it is playing direct.
We have a strength that is well known and that is speed and don't get me wrong - this is a great thing.
But the mindset to shift when we are on top and looking pretty, almost forgets the logistics of rugby league from day 1....to play through the middle and the shift will then offer more space after bashing down the middle door.
Now the important part, Penrith, Melbourne and Roosters as examples have To'o, Young, Tago, Warbrick, Manu, Teddy, pap,....who run an entire set while the forwards get back some air and punch the middle either 1 off, or dart from dummy half scoots and generally make massive ground doing this to simply setup for a good kick to win field position, or often even win a penalty with the quicker bodies and put the foot on the oppositions throat.
I know we seem to lack the punch of these other outside backs as far as metre eaters, but this is often due to the fact our outside backs run more from kick returns in general play, not from kickoffs after scoring a try....while these other teams are copping the bruises and punching through the guts, with these outside backs, we are playing pretty and shifting to the edges....yes we score the odd try or make breaks, but often like last night the winger like Lehi Hopoate is taken into touch or there's a dropped ball.
Just a thought, but really feel some of these outside men need to put hands up for a set now and then which will test the tired defenders with quicks coming at them and allow the forwards to regain gas for that next defensive set, to stop those lazy tackles that piggyback opposition downfield, along with being on the ground in back field while they play it and threaten every time from poor marker defence.
And if Seibold want to tell the entire team to stop getting "Bullied" when they are at marker would be great, they tend to let the bloke playing it walk 1-2m metres off the mark EVERY WEEK and sure it's on the ref, but hold your ground and there will be errors and penalties come our way and most importantly t,hey will not allow the line break up the guts, like the Api try last night.

We do not ,have that killer instinct consistently! The squandering of leads all season tells you that.

What we really struggle in is how to manage leads leading up to breaks, we are TOO expansive for our own good sometimes. last night at 16-0 we attempt a spread, get bundled into touch and pretty much do not see the ball for 10 minutes, when the percentage play was to get to our kick and complete the set, that is a fundamental we do not do that well and time and time again we concede a penalty or 6 again which leads to the inevitable try. its a bad habit this team has!

I can only comment on Penrith but there a very bonded team that are extremely professionally organised and run like clockwork, to me we're a talented group of mercianies that are not bonded in the same fashion nor run nearly as professionally.

Penrith are probably the best example of a team who use "all" players to fit the modern game....count the sets and hitups from their outside backs to "set up" and win great field position to kick ....and then they "attack" with their defence.....we don't have this.

IMO we lack, desperately, an effective dummy-half. Really Croker offers very little - has absolutely no running game (therefore no deception) and his service is mediocre. Chan Tong is promising but at this stage not good enough. But time to stop wasting time with Croker.

Yeah, it’s clear we are good at one thing; scoring off sweeping backline movements. If that’s not working, there is little else happening.
Bruising defence? No.
Great yardage from outside backs? No
Thunderous hit ups from the middles? No
Craft around the ruck? No

We’ve got one thing that’s elite in the NRL and that is speed in attack. Everything else is either middle of the road or weak.

Don’t get enough from a well rounded lock, don’t get enough from our hooker, our yardage from our back four is horrible, our captain can’t lead and compose the team

and burbo and Brookes, that defense last night was under 15 stuff. But they are both painfully average players

These are the biggest deficiencies

What we lack is influence at the top level.
We can't buy success like Easts or Canterbury.
We can't develop sufficient junior talent because most of our youth are out surfing.
We can't develop pathway links to Queensland talent because the NSWRL forbids us.
We can't get support at NRL level because our owner is not powerful enough and our fan base is not large enough.
We are a middling suburban club, and have been for the past decade. Our glory days are unlikely to ever return. Time to dig out the old B&W DVDs from the 1970s and live on great memories.

Yes I agree but 2 of the players we let go came back to bite us on the A..e like most of us said would happen, water under the bridge stuff now

Very well thought out opinion this one !!!

Bang on I reckon.

How to fix though ??

I’ve said for some time we are short a couple of damaging forwards , Paseka is hot and cold , AoA lukewarm at best , Ola is great in attack but hardly damaging , Burbo really doesn’t cut the mustard , Waddell is okay a reasonable toiler but not damaging.

Jurbo is Jurbo.

Not sure who but we need a couple of really hard working forwards,

Love Froggy , what a little champion , but I like many can see he offers little in attack.

As to the back 3 doing the hard work, Saab is fast and tall , that’s his attributes , young Hoppa is a great finisher but pretty light for damaging power hit ups.

Turbo the exception.

I reckon we can fix some of those things but not all.

Any one of the following would make a world of difference to our pack potency:
Cotter, Carrigan, Collins, Yeo, Murray, Angus Crichton, Tino...
but the only forward we'd have a chance of luring is RGC who is playing well now that he needs a new contract. I'd settle for him, even though I fear he might take the money and bludge.

manly and parramatta are similar standards. parra was leadin 16-0 tonight against broncos too.

Personally, I don't love our recruitment and retention.

I think Simpkin was an astute purchase but is languishing in the reserves because of Croker's status as a leader and strong trainer. He's not the best 9 at our club. Gordon CKT is a reserve grader. Paseka and Aloiai are inconsistent plodders. The pack is not up to it. Seibs has tried to coach our side to play expansive football to combat the quality in the middle and the lack of craft around the ruck. I don't love this tactic.

He should have gone down the same rout as the Dogs, who have a less talented roster than Manly. Bring through energetic, athletic and fast youth, like Sam Fainu and build a mobile pack. Instead and went and got Brown (OK he has been good but he is not the future) and Lodge, re-signed slow cumbersome middles and let Lawton walk.

The game is all about speed under the current interpretation of the rules. Our pack is too slow and there's not enough happening around the middle of ruck to trouble good opposition.

Missing ingredient is one of the two gun hooker's Brisbane have waiting in the mix.
Smoothy or Mozer.
Get it done.
Second missing ingredient ,A couple of hard running ,hard hting young tough forwards.
Also get it done.....
(Talking to you Mestrov)

Even some small changes would help. Why do Saab, Garrick (and to lesser extent Talau) regularly receive the ball 2, 3 or 4 metres behind the play the ball when working out from our own end? The storm back 3 always receive it "flat" at the play the ball (or forward).
