Juniors Discussion Thread

I know it is only a Ball trial, but gee Muagututia has stood out from the start.
He is a decent size for a dummy half and can see why he has played a bit at lock.
Looks a real asset in defense in the middle, stands out as he works hard and physical, doesn't look like a real "fast twitch" athlete(by that I mean super quick and athletic, not slow by any means....),but looks instinctive and backs up breaks, seems to read what is happening, has a bit of a kicking game close to the line.

One area of concern for Muagututia for me,his passing game from dummy half was not 100 percent, got a bit sloppy as he fatigued, think he played the full game.
Wonder if the club views him as a utility option more than an outright 9?
He looked impressive out there but there were a couple of sloppy passes.Physically he is very tall for a 9,looks like a lock physique wise.

Just watched the replay of the SG Ball game & smoking Joe has pretty much nailed it. Disappointing game from manly that was full of errors but that’s why we have trials I guess. Defence was also horrible at times.

Large looks like a unreal athlete but not a natural ball player, has a lot of work to do but still so young & I’m sure learning from DCE + Brooks over the next few years will make a huge difference.

Was good to see Muagututia taking a step out from hooker to bring his forwards onto the ball & getting players over the advantage line as they catch it. Like Joe said he had a few shocking passes as he tired out. Would have liked to see a few more scoots but manly turned it over mosts sets before he had the chance.

Laiafi was a standout in the pack & looks really hard to put down. Good to see a big unit like him charging into the defensive line bowling a few. Looked out of puff in defence a few times but that’s expected from a guy his size in the first trial of the year. Excited to see him develop over the next few years, looks like a big future for him.

Wouldn’t recommend to watch as it was a thumping but if you want to just go on youtube & search Bunnies TV

Edit here’s the link:

Amazing stuff from bunnies tv. Excellent and clear filming. Here what the commentator said. No team sheet from Manly so if anyone online knows a player let them know. Sounded real amateur and annoying if you went to watch the Manly kids.
Agree totally on the star status of Large, Muagututia and Laiafi. To me, Large looks more a runner than 5/8 so this will need to be worked on. Made a beautiful run early out wide and took off. Again, not much talent outside him so he seemed to be heavily marked.
M the hooker is one really big kid. Tough and smart. As mentioned, he is not a guy who scoots out, but I reckon they will work with him and make him a tad leaner and quicker in scoots. He's a very good signing, and he looks classy. I see why they consider him a key part of a future spine. The Souths guy mentioned how big Laiafi is, and he looked great. He definitely will need at least another year, but he has huge potential. Definitely see these three making the NRL squad in 1-2 years.

If this were our local boys, then I would dread thinking that if the top three players mentioned didn't play, there will some cricket scores this season. Souths destroyed them, sometimes at will. We had a lot of small white kids, they got smashed in tackles and driven back 5-10 metres at times.

Just watched the Matts game also on the bunnies tv youtube page. Ashton Large is definitely the starting 9. Opposite in many ways to Zaidas. Very quick out of dummy half, scored a slick try and service looked strong. He defended really well also. Could end up being a great combination.

The junior pathway team was impacted in the recent club restructuring and are operating on reduced staffing I believe.

This may impact the ability to provide some extra information??

Reduced staff for local junior development? Is this part of some master strategy?

I've heard huge wraps on him so great to see him in our colus and doing well, already.

Really? One of Zaidas biggest issues, during his times with the Bulldogs and Eels, was his tendancy to scot too much and overplay the ball.
