Trent Barrett and PJ Marsh were both charged by the NRL match review committee following a controversial incident at Parramatta Stadium on Friday night.

Marsh was charged with a grade two careless high tackle charge for his high challenge on Barrett after the St George Illawarra captain had put in a clearing kick in the 55th minute of a fiery clash with Parramatta.

Barrett must answer to a grade two striking charge after he retaliated against the shot from Marsh, who will escape suspension with an early guilty plea.

Barrett will miss Sunday's match against Manly at Brookvale Oval if he submits an early guilty plea and risks a two-match ban if he unsuccessfully fights the charge.

The incident overshadowed a memorable 40-14 victory to the Eels, whose fullback Wade McKinnon raced 80 metres to score a try as players rushed in after Barrett started swinging punches at Marsh.

Cronulla prop Jason Stevens, Canberra hooker Simon Woolford and Sydney Roosters back-rower Michael Crocker were all charged with dangerous throws after round 18 of the NRL.

Even with an early guilty plea, Raiders skipper Woolford will miss six matches for his grade two offence and eight weeks if he challenges the charge and loses.

Stevens and Crocker (both grade one offences) will each cop two-match bans for early guilty pleas.

Roosters five-eighth Jamie Soward will escape punishment if he lodges an early guilty plea to a grade one dangerous throw charge.

If Marsh is charged with a high tackle, how can it be a try? A penalty is given, so the ball is dead. This allowing the ball to run is ridiculous. You will soon have teams doing the niggle like punches in groups so it is blocked from view etc. in the hope that they 'start' a fight and you can run in and score.

Anyway I thought it was leading with teh elbow and high as well - Hoppa got 17, penalty to Dragons, then reversed to Eels for Barret's idiot response. Still no try anyway. Oh well video refs suck, we knocked the ball back.
