I agree with you.

I was interested to hear those in favour of bringing in Aloiai and understanding what is a fair price because as you said, I think we have enough depth in this position that we should have thrown this (theoretical) $500k to attempt to get a 9 from another club.

Luring back someone like Verrills with a large portion of the $500k makes more sense to me than spending it on a prop that doesn’t rank in the top 50 in any stats other 44th for post contact metres and 15th for decoy runs.
The problem as I see it in bringing in a quality recognised hooker is they would know from the get go that if Fainu's case goes his way they suddenly become a second string number nine, not an attractive scenario for someone looking to establish themselves imo

Souffs have really got this recruitment strategy worked out. When they want to shed a player they convince them to leave with an under-the-table payment they they spin the reason for the split as being on "compassionate grounds". That means they get to appear to be a "caring" club only concerned with the welfare of the player -- but the real reason is that it frees up space in their salary cap.
A little while later that player will have a miraculous recovery and sign on with another club. It's a win-win for the player and Souffs, who have the wealth to pull off such a con.

But surely the club can target a hooker/lock style of player. The Victor Radley mould. Jazz Tevanga from the warriors is off contract next year. He would be perfect. Coverage for 9 and then if Fainu comes back, he slots into the forward rotation.
Tevaga is a penalty machine. We just got rid of one and still have jakey. I reckon Schuster could fit that role for a year

Geez very risky I reckon throwing a young lock-5/8 into first grade for his 2nd game and expect him to keep up with the defensive workload of a 9.
That could bust the kid before he even gets a chance to shine.

If it’s the current squad only - I’d like Cust there. I think he can do the job.

But someone like Verrills has a heap of upside and is a specialist hooker...but understand he maybe hesitant with the Fainu situation.

Or the club goes and finds a Tevaga player from somewhere who can join the forward rotation.
I meant as a ballplaying lock not as a 9. I just re read my post comes across a bit confusing my bad. Cust is the man til fainu returns

clarkeys.rl.column He's a club favourite at the Wests Tigers and loved by everyone at the club, however the club has refused to negotiate with Josh Aloiai in a move that could cost them his future.
___
Meanwhile, the Manly Sea Eagles are more than ready to come to the party. They have offered Aloiai a much larger and long-term contract.
___
The Sea Eagles recently lost star prop Addin Fonua-Blake and Aloiai looms large as his replacement. He would play alongside his Samoan International team mate Martin Taupau in the front row.
___
Aloiai, 25, has played 90 NRL games since making his debut in 2016. In this time he has also represented Toa Samoa twice.
___
This season he averaged 136 running metres and 28 tackles per game, across 49 minutes. Factor in four tries and it could be said Aloiai's 2020 was seki seki.
___
His stats have continued to rise throughout his career and I believe a move under coach Des Hasler will only help this.

136 avg meters, and 28 tackles for avg 49m aint bad plus can hit a hole and score a try.

If he is coming here then chances are he would be prop, but just wondering if Des is looking to play him on the edge.Pretty sure he started as an edge backrower and moved to the middle as a lock before moving into front row.
189cm and 106kg fits the bill as an edge backrower even though there are more teams looking for mobility through the middle, could be a Kaufusi/Bromwich type like the Storm use,too much time on my hands on a sunday, just musing.....

He is a good player but I don’t think he is 500 000 good.i thought he was a great signing but about 100 K less seems about right.

I fret about those in charge of recruitment at our club. It’s like they really don’t know what they are doing.

I will be really annoyed if haumole isn’t In the 17 next year.

Garner and Davey have far less upside than haumole and aloiai is just another player blocking his pathway.

I was thinking the same. He has a few similarities to Joey G. New rules suits backrowers types up front more than ever too.
I'd still want Garner as well

Yes, stuck with long term contracts like Boyle.

Not sure if it’s worth a grain of salt, but I got passed on info that Tigers wouldn’t match Aloiai’s $500k asking price which has led him to us.

See what happens ... but for those in favour of this move, is $500k overs/unders/on the money???
Overs

however thought about 350k-400k would probably be fair given he would probably start over Paseka and is a bit more experienced

Really can not see how a player [ or prop ] that other clubs hardly seem to be going out of their way to recruit could warrant that sort of money in the 500 k range . No doubt a pretty fair player [ at least from reports ] but playing overs for a prop is hardly one of Manly 's main priorities at the current time surely .
I agree with this strongly

Kotoni Staggs would be on 500k-600k, max 700k. Stephen Crichton upgrade is rumoured to be 450k-500k.

Put a position that is less worrying for manly (than wing, second row and hooker), with a player who is pretty average...why would you throw 500k at him?

Christian Welch was 500k and is a seasoned big game player and tore up in origin game one. I called for his signing and everyone laughed... would you take him now? I sure would.

Absolutely spot on. Haumole played a MOTM performance halfway thru the year, and that was it, Des shunted him.
