Found this old news article, must have always been the plan to get Des back if things did not work out with the face slap recipient.

Des Hasler To Return to Manly in 2018!

Speculation is growing that Bulldogs Coach Des Hasler is Set to return to Manly in 2018.

It is understood that Certain people in power at Manly are eager to bring Des back, but there’s resistance from others and their current coach Trent Barrett still has time left to run on his deal, which expires at the end of the 2018 season.

Des Hasler survived a board meeting 2 months ago and will coach Canterbury in 2017. Club legend Steve Mortimer was not so lucky, and will no longer be apart of the Bulldogs from 2017.

Hasler, 55, will no doubt be under fierce scrutiny from members and fans following a limp finals exit and inconsistent form over the course of 2016 and the same will go for Trent Barrett who first season coaching at the top level was less then impressive, winning just 8 games and finishing 13th on the ladder.

It is believed if Manly get off to a poor start to the 2017 season, Manly will have no choice but to sack Barrett and Des Hasler will be the first coach they will be chasing to help Manly become a power house was again, like they were when Hasler was last at the reign in the Norther Beaches….

The Saga is expected to run throughout the entire 2017 season….
How old is that?

Great to see rons team getting back together
We need to get brick, Brian and champ, maybe even veronica corningstone
I'm excited

Whoever emailed Gorman needs to send him another one telling him that majority of fans would be happy with Des...it was our forum that put a stop to Cartwrong getting the gig...he had it in the bag until we pointed out to management that it was a mistake.

We don't want the journos feeding the club the idea that there will be a revolt...because we'll end up with Phil Economidis coaching us...we seem to love the Gold Coast connections down here at Manly.

@simon_eagle can call Lyall and tell him that he can relax and count the membership renewal monies 🙂

The SportingNews 'divided Fans' is 99% 'Yay' from Manly Fans and 99% 'Nay' from opposition Fans as they know that Manly with Des is an untoppable force with decennial Premierships

Only due to injury, or lack of talent there. Des also claimed we had been developing 5/8's in the halves.

Jamie Lyon was actually one of the better 5/8's we've seen to be honest (win a GF 40-0 with him there), and Des was able to acquire Steven Bell to facilitate that.

Yes, Willow played there at times (was a 5/8 in juniors), but got moved to the backrow.

Then he acquired Orford, who was a true General out there and quarterback, so the need for an organisational half wasn't required (hence making the finals almost every single year).

Des is a Manly legend, who after achieving amazing results , was forced to endure KPI's, and people forget the bull**** he had to endure with a back office habitually infighting (which he shielded the players from).

People forget management gave him a rough / raw deal towards the end given his need to take ownership of the club. Then he started receiving huge offers (double the money) from Greenburg illegally to breach his contract and leave us (the club has those emails).

Yeah, a sticking point for me is your last sentence. I'm sure Des knew it was illegal too. It takes two blokes to shake hands. That's what irks me about this Manly legend. When it came to the crunch, he had no problem doing the dirty on us. None what so ever.

I find it funny that there is forgiveness born from desperation. I wonder if TB will be forgiven in years to come. He has also been mistreated and therefore, sh!t on us. Of course, we blame Gould, just like we blamed Greenburg for Des's decision. You can understand it from a non Manly bloke like Barrett,,,,but it hurt coming from Des.

If it comes to pass, and the wins mount up I'll warm to him I guess.

Wow my self imposed exile from silvertails for the off season lasted 24 hrs, turned the tv on this morning to hear the hopefully news.
If Des does indeed return I'm putting a pineapple on manly to win next year!
I for one hope he does, he will add steel to an impressive roster, imagine this team with an effective defence?
He will also rebuild our culture, something that has died since toovey left.

The Bitter Bulldogs respond at the Kennel ....

But our ex coach deswanker is apparently on the verge of signing a new deal with manly and announcement will be next week.

How stupid can manly be?

manly are a basket case

This could be our ticket to get rid of Foran!

I don't care where he coaches as long as it is never here. No one who wants to be part of a quality spine will go near him because he coaches instinct & talent out of players. The good thing is all the residual plods we have from his tenure can **** off over to him.

I just had a look at the manly forum, they are seriously struggling and mostly cheering for des hasler, he totally ****ed their club and they had to rort the salary cap to try and get out of it... they failed at that. Kick them out the NRL won’t miss there 5000 supporters

Can’t wait until we play them on our turf with him as coach. Whoever is seated in front of the coaches box must have a sign saying **** you Des. In saying that. Are Manly stupid. He ruined there club as well. Toovey must be feeling very hard done by.

Good. He can finally DEStroy Manly once & for all.

He's always coached Manly the same way he did us. Des doesn't focus on attack, he focuses on defence.

I reckon a few players will jump ship if he signs (surely Marty T being one).

Be careful what you wish for Manly Fans 😀

The problem is that Dessies coaching style is old school. Nobody coaches like that (and has success) these days.

Seems an odd fit. He spent millions on facilities at Belmore for no result. Manly apparently have poor facilities. Thats why Barrett left.

Predicted positions after 25 rounds next year (depending upon coach)

Hasler - 3rd
Toovey - 4th
Bennett - 6th
Walters - 7th
Cartwright - 12th

Would I be upset if Des Hasler became Manly coach from 2019?

No.

But while he would be able to identify talent he wants to either retain or go after, I wouldn't let him be in charge of player contracts. His track record there, while getting results in the short term, leaves long term problems.

While I can neither forgive nor forget what happened after the 2011 Grand Final win, I am willing to let bygones be bygones.

I was in the same camp as @Mark from Brisbane . But it's been 7 years since, and we are getting mighty close to NE days. I'd take Des as long as he brings Donny back. And I know this won't go down well but, I'd bring Foran back as well (if I'm going to forgive and forget I may as well go the whole hog!) Get the old firm together. My thoughts on LG are well known>>>>>Blacktown.
So yeah, I am now on the official bring "Des" back bandwagon.

That’s perhaps one bridge too far but I get your drift!
