YOUNG talent will be able to stay in their home town under new changes to the National Rugby League pathway system.
In a media statement released today, the Australian Rugby League Commission approved the introduction of two 16-team competitions across NSW and Queensland which will replace the current National Youth Competition in 2018.
That's good news to Ipswich Jets CEO Jason Cubit who believes the current system takes players out of home at an age they can ill-afford.
"This is really good timing for us to have a pathway all the way through from the Mal Meninga Under 18 program right through to Intrust Super Cup level,” he said. "The NYC competition was taking kids out of home at the wrong age and pumping them up to be something they are not.
"Only about 10 percent of players who played in the under 20's would be signed by an NRL club and the rest were left on the scrap heap.
