INTERVIEW: MANLY GRAND FINAL HERO MICHAEL ROBERTSON
Wednesday 18 Feb 2009 23:48
by Matthew O'Neill

Michael Robertson etched his name in Rugby League folklore with an impressive three-try performance for Manly in the Grand Final last year.

Robertson has been one of the unsung heroes at Manly since coming across from Canberra in 2006 after playing 59 games for the Raiders from 2001-05.

The Sea Eagles prepare for the World Club Challenge with a warm up game against Super League side Harlequins this weekend and on Sunday March 1 will do battle against the Leeds Rhinos at Elland Road.

Robertson's three tries in the NRL Grand Final last year went a long way to ensuring Manly made its way across to England to win the prize that has eluded several NRL sides aside from Melbourne in 2001 and the Roosters in 2003.

Speaking to Rleague.com prior to flying out from Sydney Robertson spoke about the Grand Final experience etching his name in elite company shining on the big stage.

Robertson's performance nearly won him Australian honours, but instead played for Scotland where his experience was vital in a side that did extremely well to win their match against Fiji. Robertson admitted that he would be catching up with many of his Scotland team-mates and he still keeps in regular touch with them.

The focus for Robertson has been on the World Club Challenge and admitted he hadn't given the NRL competition much thought and wasn't aware that he would be marking up against Bulldogs legend Hazem El Masri in the opening round. El Masri is a converted try away from equaling the all-time points-scoring record held by Newcastle champion Andrew Johns.

Robertson gave Manly legend Steve Menzies a special tribute during the interview.

Stay tuned for the Jamie Lyon interview coming up in the next day or two.
