The Who

Journey Man
Having just watched the rugby I wonder if RL coaches will consider trying to copy the technique of lifting a player to get above the opposition when diffusing a high kick. I know it would be difficult but it seems that players have time to 'escort' others or block them when a high kick goes up. If they worked on lifting the fullback, or winger then they would be way above the attacking jumper and a much better chance of diffusing the bomb.
Just a thought.
I don't think it's illegal to lift in RL, is it?

Wouldn't be illegal to lift as long as it doesn't interfere with the opposition, however in rugby lineouts the ball is coming at you in basically a horizontal direction and everyone is standing still, which makes it easier to judge, whereas in league ,the ball is traveling in a more of vertical plane and bodies constantly moving around, sort of works in AFL as they use the backs of other players to take a mark, however the whole game is based on kicking and catching.

So it gets a little complicated as the attacking team can't tackle the catcher until their feet touch the ground. We should try it once (before it's banned) and have the 'lifter' carry the 'catcher' up the other end of the field and drop them over for a try. :)

Jokes aside, an interesting topic for discussion.

In rugby many of the kick-offs are short and the defending side does lift their catcher to get above the attacking rushers. But it is a more controlled situation than a RL fullback and winger face when a bomb is hoisted near their tryline.

Kicks in league are much higher and longer and with ginger on them .. dipping and swaying .. judging the correct lift point would be a comedy skit waiting to happen .

Also having one or two lifters close enough to be useful would leave plenty of open space elsewhere ... it's a no from me Who ..

Let’s not also forget they have 15 players on the field v our 13!!

They're too busy blocking kick-chasers in the nrl

Interesting thought. Will probably only have time to do this off a set restart like kick off, or drop out. 5th tackle attacking bombs won't really give enough time imo. Very different to escort etc, you will need at least 3 players on the same blade of turf in a matter of seconds...

Yes it’s all very predictable. Unlike league. Also they have 2 extra players to do the lifting. In a league game if you have 2 or 3 lifters, that would leave big gaps in the line.

How about, making the ball much smaller?
Imagine the fun!
If it can fit in the palm of your hand, no-one would know who has the bloody thing and every single player would have to get smashed on suspicion.
Just a thought.

I think it's definately innovative, but has a few major problems....in Yawnion they are lifted to a designated position they train for and know almost exactly where the ball is coming from a throw in and the ball is only airborn for a second or 2, as opposed to a kick with Far longer hangtime x 5 - 6 seconds.
In the NRL you have say Reynold, Cleary put a swirling kick up that changes direction 85 times in the air and often even the wingers fullback struggle to determine the landing point......carrying someone around to this point, would not only be almost impossible to find the correct spot to be situated, but the collisions could also be a far more dangerous proposition, particularly the carrier who's neck would be very vulnerable.
I certainly like the idea as a Manly supporter, as in recent years ANY idea to help our wingers contest better is worthwhile to consider.

Totally agree. It would be very difficult to master such an athletic feat.
But as they say: nothing great is easy.
Look how today's wingers have become flying missiles able to hold the football in one hand and planting it over the try line without any part of their body going into touch. Or the way goal kickers can bend the ball in flight. Or the way water boys with no medical training can stop the attacking momentum of an opposition team simply by raising one arm?

You could be right...imagine 10m out and the half launches the cross field kick.....a planned outside back leaps up onto the shoulders of his mate awaiting the right time....leaps like a leopard after a warthog and takes the ball 15 feet in the air and plunges in for the meat pie....as you point out.....never say never !!

The Leapin' Leopard?
And why not? We've had The Chicken Wing.
