Ice Creams at games

So, mainly sponsors flogging stuff. What the hell are URM going to be giving away? Just bring back - all 3 grades, junior sprints before the main game, the guy selling bags of nuts, the boomerang guy and around the grounds score updates, and everyone would be happy. Its not rocket surgery.
Probably a URM initiative to increase the rubbish removal fee >:)

I confess I used to call out to the nut guy and when he was almost to me I'd say 'Oh they're roasted I only eat raw ones' ... I was a prick ...🙁

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I was an ice cream seller at a few games in about 1983 at brookie.

A school mate knew this dodgy looking old bloke who had the concession. The concession man was akin to the fella who sells the sausages outside the ground these days.

The concession man had wooden boxes with lids that had straps on them. He would supply the box, dry ice and Cornettos to us. Also a float of change which had to balance at the end if the day. We had to pay the bloke retail for the cornettos, which I think was about $1.20, and we would sell them for about $2.50. In those days cornettos were already expensive, so the mark up was ridiculous. I remember copping abuse about the price.

It was a terrible job and I was only about 14 at time. The box was heavy, the dry ice was awful, I missed most of the on-field action and the crowd hassled us constantly. Yes people would call you over then pretend they hadn’t.

My mate had the bright idea of buying heaps of cans of Scrooge cola and selling them on the sly out of the boxes. They cost about 20c a can at franklins, and we sold them for 60c without clearing it with the man. It worked in a small way one Sunday, then at the next home game we ramped it up and bought about 50 cans each to sell. That day it absolutely pissed down and I reckon the crowd would have been barely 4,000. No one bought ice cream or drinks, and the concession man tore us a new one when he saw the cans. That was my last day as an ice cream boy.

We had cones too before the game, wasn't from Maccas, and we definitely enjoyed the game too.
Rolled a number at a trial game vs Storm ( from hazy memory ) at Brookie on the hill...purely for research purposes....after about five or so minutes of self medicating with the herbal remedy, took a minute to reflect. ...perfect spot..great team...great fkin country.

I am officially a grumpy old bastard .... can't cop all that contrived crap that goes on ... bring on the footy ...

But, they aren't really marketing to the footy fan are they ...

I remember the old Lang Park before it was redeveloped and before the Bronco's with the vendors walking around the stands and hill.

HOT CHIKO!

Would be a great idea. Maybe they can do this for other food and drinks too. 🙂 Then we wouldn't waste so much time queuing and missing the game. Or else they should have more than one ice cream van.

My daughter is now just old enough to buy an ice cream on her own. I remember the first time she wanted one. I gave her $5 and told her what to do (and this was the first time she had ever done anything like this by herself). I did't want to stand in line and miss the game. Ha. Luckily she managed to buy one and find her way back to where I was sitting. But my heart was racing the whole time!

Love it, I tell my daughter that if she wants to waste half the game to get an ice cream then she can get it, I'm there to watch the footy.
I can keep an eye on her from where we usually sit on the hill.

As a kid,
- peanuts in the shell for 20c,
- dad would buy a couple of first tryscorer doubles
- iceceams - cornettos', chocolate hearts etc
- pies/sausage rolls
- cans of passiona or leed lemonade

All of that came to us.

Would get there before U23's started and we only left our spot to go to the toilet I reckon
Used to love the boomerang throwing between games too

Everything is so PC now that OH&S and public liabilty stops a kid trying to make a few bucks whilst at the footy, imagine if he tripped over
or was abused or ripped off etc - the paperwork would destroy anyone trying to make a buck trying to serve the paying public.

They even have to have the runway up the middle of the hill FFS!

Yep, gettin' old.

You run the risk of a full blown NRL investigation into 3rd party Streets sponsorship.

Having players seen with ice cream is a very very very risky move for the club.
I disagree, ice cream is a high value commodity (eg magnums) and can be consumed or melted quickly if the salary cap auditor visits. I bet the roosters provide inducements in the form of Maggie beer burnt fig containers.

I was not dodgy looking!
Nah.....
