How do you know if you car has been towed?

I have always wondered how you can tell if your car has been towed. I assume they tow it to a nearby street where it is legally allowed to stand, but still, do they call you or anything?

I don't know if they're supposed to contact you somehow, or if there's a time limit or what, but don't expect to be contacted immediately.

Also, although they're meant to dump it somewhere legal, don't be surprised if they don't. A mate of mine had his car towed and by the time he'd wandered the streets to find it, there was another towing company getting ready to fine and tow him a second time!

I am just curious. I was just thinking about it because a car just got towed out the front of my building and I was trying to think of where they would take it and how the dude would know without freaking out and thinking it were stolen!
