William of Orange landing in Southern England to claim the throne in 1688.

Did you know the Dutch invaded Britain to restore the monarchy after the English Civil War?

Just a thread for all you history buffs out there.
It was personally my favourite subject in school.
This man inspired me to name my Silvertails account the Red Baron:
Speaking of Great Barons feathered friend
One of my favorites was
The Golden Greek Prince Phillip Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich.

Captain James Cook since I was 10 and still is one of my favorite people in history. It's amazing to think that many of the navigation charts he created during his voyages of the oceans (particularly the Pacific Ocean) are still referenced till this day. Sometime ago Sam Niell presented a fascinating documentary series of Cooks voyages on the FOXTEL History Channel.

Agreed, and yes I also saw that Sam Neill doco. Great stuff. Just a pity his legacy is now being tarnished by leftist revisionism.

Archimedes
Eratosthenes
Omar Khayyam
Winston Churchill
Kublai Khan
In Xanadu did kuala khan a stately pleasure dome decree. Can still remember that line from high school English, but can’t remember the name of the missus. I will have to research Eratosthenes and Omar khayyam.

In a place called Xanadu, the Mongolian leader Kubla Khan ordered his servants to construct an impressive domed building for pleasure and recreation on the banks of the holy river Alph, which ran through a series of caves so vast that no one could measure them, and then down into an underground ocean.

I have no idea where historical fact .. and poetry .. diverge ...

Measureless to man , as I recall from Coleridge.

He did the simple maths to measure the circumference of the Earth to within an accuracy of 100 miles ... proved the earth was round 200 years before the Birth of Jesus .. with just a stick, a protractor and 8th grade maths ..

Was considered a lunatic and died bat **** looney ...

most smart people knew the Earth was round for millenia .. yet I was taught in school that Columbus proved the Earth was round in 1492 ..

And to think some people still don’t believe it.

I just ignore that rubbish. Although I do feel sad for new generations that seek to vandalise and destroy his monuments. They recently damaged the Endeavour's anchor. Why the hell, they did that, we'll never know!
