Russ Pepperell - our coach in 1965. I have to admit I have no recollection of him ever been mentioned? He was a bit before my time but does anyone recall Russ

I remember the name, but can't recall him coaching, I remember Wally O'Connell coaching the following two seasons.
Looking at that forward pack, at some stage of their career all of those guys played for Australia

Good ol Russ "Peppermint" Pepperell, champion bloke and......just bullshiiting @The Wheel , no idea. But love seeing those old programs.@:D.....poor ol reserves don’t get a mention:lipssealed:

He was an Englishman (who had played the game) with I believe some advanced coaching ideas for that time.

The old Jack Pollard book ‘Rugby League - The Australian Way’ has a chapter about John ‘Pogo’ Morgan’s rise to the Australian team in 1965. Amongst other things, Morgan filled out considerably (from a ‘string bean’) under Pepperell’s charge.

Pepperell died in Bundaberg in 2003, aged around 85.

Always happy to help out. Ciao.

Just looking at those teams, some great names in the forwards. All the Manly forwards either were or became internationals.

Whilst the Parramatta backrow* were all internationals (Thornett a dual-international), along with Rayner, who also played for Australia.

*That is a great backrow.

Well before I was born but always thought Frank Stanton was a Front rower...not a halfback
As a kid when I first dioscovered rugby league, and Manly, Frank was playing inside centre with Alec Tennant outside. We had Fulton at 5/8, and Les Hannigan on a wing, George Hunter was coach, and they made the grand final (1968).
Never heard of Pepperell though.

Looks like nothing has changed.

That Parra team looks to be complete rubbish other than the Thornetts, Brian Hambly and Billy Raynor from Yass.

That is because to be a reserve for first grade you needed to have played in reserve grade ... any one of those reserve grade players then could then be called upon ... so in fact all of the reserve grade team were "reserves" ...

Pss ... I wouldn't be surprised if that is the most times reserves has been used in one sentence in the history of the English language ...

It took several reads, but the penny finally dropped.😛

Coached Manly in 64 and 65 Finished 8th in 65 and 7th in 64 and lost to the bears 3 of our 4 times with the other game being a draw

He was obviously an early Trent Barrett style coach

He followed on from another non Manly coach in 1963 called Tony Paskins Many finished 6th in 63
