Snake's Alive!
Gus weighed in on the Eels woes, declaring they are a 'manufactured' team.
He went on to say "the way it's been crafted and brought together and cobbled together with high-price purchases" is problematic and "not always the way to win a premiership." He also claims that "as soon as they're challenged, they break up, they isolate, and it's every man for themselves – and we saw that tonight again."
It's interesting for a number of reasons. I guess he is saying that because they are a side put together via a check book, there is no sense of 'team'. Then you look at Manly and we the Trbo family, DCE and Foran (who came through together) and a host of young guys like Saab, Olakau'atu, Fainu, Schuster and co. that grew up playing footy together. A fair portion of our team debuted or played junior footy at Manly...thus we have this 'team' that play like a team.
The last interesting thing to come out of the comments is Gould's Bulldogs. I know he came in after the signings, but if ever there is an example of a 'manufactured team', it'll be the Dogs of 2022. He will be at the helm of the biggest cash splash the NRL has seen in years. Obviously, it's done and that's what he is going to have to work with, but I wonder what his thoughts are about it. I imagine he will want to start getting some Dogs juniors through the joint, a la Penrith.
