THE Gold Coast will become the 16th team to join the National Rugby League competition, the NRL has announced.

The Gold Coast beat bids from the New South Wales Central Coast and from Wellington in New Zealand and will join the competition in 2007.

The decision was announced after a meeting of the NRL partnership committee in Sydney this morning.

Sydney Roosters' assistant coach John Cartwright will be head coach of the new premiership team.
