Glad to have most of our side signed for next year.

You shouldn't confuse reality with negativity. When you use a thread title 'Glad to have most of our side signed for next year' it's hard not to chuckle. Just look at the number of players we re-sign to extended contracts in the middle of one season only to see them being shopped around and shipped off before the pre-season of the following season. It shows a lack of vision and forward planning. Also, this kind of behavior isn't conducive to a loyal arrangement between your playing roster and the idiots in charge of the asylum. It goes both ways.

I've been supporting this club for almost 50 years. I've seen a lot over those years. I have been positive most of that time. I think I'm entitled to my negativity if I see fucek all to be positive about.
The reality is that this is the way the game is heading with player salaries only going to go up and trading players away is not going to go away,I don't particularly like it but it is what it is.You are right you are entitled to your opinion and can chuckle at optimistic posts, just as I am entitled to mine and can roll my eyes when I see posts bagging the club and leadership/direction it is taking...I have been supporting the club for 35 yrs but the length of time as a supporter means fucek all.

Let me use the most obvious examples. Gutherson and Ballin last year. Ballin in particular signs a 2 year extension to his contract. Obviously he was in their future plans. A few weeks later he is surplus to needs. Wtf was that?? That had nothing to do with the salary cap increases and other rubbish. Sure they were trying to trade a player but why sign him in the first place if they were going to shaft him a few weeks later? Similar situation with Gutherson. Having players tied to contracts means nothing to our current administration.

Also, I don't recall bagging your positivity. I argued against your notion that we have our roster tied down for next year and that somehow we were better off than the hapless Tigers - and other clubs. As for my negativity, lets look at this forum 10 rounds into next season. I hope I'm wrong but if I'm not then it won't be pretty around here. They'll have to start a sister forum called "Everything is rosy Silvertails".

Over to you @Dan

@Frank

We have Dylan walker, Marty Kapow, Brian Kelly, Uate, and Sironen all released from their contracts early by other clubs.

We are not the only club and we are by far not the worst.

It is 2017 and it is just the way things are done. If both parties agree then there are no victims.

I take your point about Ballin,Gutherson is different,he wasn't going to be in our starting side and left to play for a club that could give him that opportunity, should we have denied him that to promote club harmony? What about Watmough a long time player, injury prone on a huge contract and wanted out, should we have kept him to promote club harmony? It goes both ways,we let players go who want an opportunity that we can't guarantee,we push players to leave that we don't feel fit in to our plans and will probably spend the year playing reserve grade which is going to do nothing to promote their career opportunities, and we don't just kick them to the kerb(yeah they might not want to go) but where we can we help to find a club that will take them.Professional sport in the modern era is ruthless and money and results driven, the days of a large nucleus sticking together for a long time are probably over.We will probably be like the Storm and keep a smaller nucleus (Trbojevic's,Taupau,DCE,Walker and AFB)and keep changing around it as needs dictate.Have you given up before the season has even started, should we all give up just because some don't think we are going to be in the 8 after rd 10?We will probably need a few rds to gel defensively out wide anyway and hope our forwards keep us in it early on in the year.I won't be death riding them if they are 11-12th after 10 rounds.

The Ballin story is as simple as it is tragic. he was re-signed by one coach only to find the next team of Bozo/Baz had different ideas.

Pre 2015, with forwards such as Gifty/Watmough/Menzies/Kite et al, and creative halves and centres like DCE, Foran and Lyon, all that was needed from the dummy half was outstanding service ... and Ballin provided that in spades. (Not mentioning his brilliant defence because all hookers need that)

In 2015 however the quality of our forwards diminished and with 2016 looming with fewer creative players, I believe the view taken was that simply providing excellent service was not going to be enough, and they went looking for a more "creative" rake.

Whether this was successful in hindsight is a "mute" point.

Then why did you make it?

Because I didn't think anybody was listening .... and my point wasn't whether it was successful, just that that was the reasoning behind the move, so I didn't raise it.

Why did you raise a mute point when I didn't?

Are we really bickering about opinions?

Come on guys we all have differing ideas and thoughts on how things have transpired and how they should transpire, surely we can agree to disagree and debate fairly right?

Sorry dad I promise to be good.....(maybe)

Not death riding them at all. My expectation is we'll struggle and that the priority will become to avoid the spoon. Although I don't see that as a real danger while Newcastle are what they are. Would much prefer to be proven wrong and be lauding Barrett as the new breed of supercoach. I just don't see it happening.

Agreed. Never said it doesn't happen. Not sure that any of them were re-signed mid season and then shopped around before the next. I understand your point about a change of coach and what that brings to the table but the people responsible for bringing in a new coach would have known long before that Toovey was a dead man walking. So why sign the cheque? Where was the vision and forward planning?

I'm only using Ballin as an example. Honestly, I wasn't happy when we re-signed him as I thought he no longer was the player we needed at hooker. However, the way he was treated is not the way Manly have operated in the past. We have been a successful club without that rubbish.

In fact the current mob running the club don't seem to give a fucek about the way we treat players that have loyally served us over the years. Still, no need to worry - we have all our players under contract for next season.

I actually said I am not a fan of trading players, but give us a list of players we should have kept and shown loyalty to that will make us a better side this year,I would have kept Hiku,Gutherson,Buhrer and Vave but not pay overs like Parra did.Who should we have shown loyalty to...Lui,Sao,CheeKam,Hasson,Littlejohn,Burgess,Starling,Hodges,Mateo,Symonds,Satini,Williame,Horo?

I couldn't care less about the players that were surplus to needs and off contract. Ballin had only just been re-signed ffs. I also consider Toovey an ex-player. They were both treated disgracefully.
