A STRAY tennis ball has robbed Wests Tigers forward Todd Payten of a preliminary finals spot and thrown the club's grand final hopes into disarray.

Payten suffered suspected ligament damage when he rolled an ankle in a freak training mishap yesterday, and coach Tim Sheens last night ruled him out of his squad to play St George Illawarra on Saturday night at ANZ Stadium.
