Garrick general news thread

Goalkicking, good point. If both Rubes and DCE are gone then we'll still have Fogarty but who is back-up?
DCE has been a pretty decent quality back-up. I guess at least we'll have all next year to get some candidates practicing.
Along with TKO, there's also Schoupp - if they stay. However, I read Schoupp's got some offers from ESL so he may not be at Manly in 2026. Otherwise there's Wakeham, if he ever plays in 1st grade again, Brooks (who kicked a few for the Tigers) and Faulalo (who's kicked goals in the lower grades).

I think from memory it was John Gray the ex pommie and Norths bloke that was the first round the corner kicker in league ..
He was, I remeber seeing him and going WTF?, but fairly certain they used to place the ball upright and then do a round the corner kick, whereas a kicker like Len Killeen used to place it upright but didn't approach it around the corner

Good question, but I don't think so.
I know that Wakeham kicks the goals in NSW Cup, so Walsh cant be very good at it if Wakeham is in front of him.
Don’t equate Wakeham’s general play with his goal kicking. He’s actually a fair to decent goal kicker 75% success rate this year and running 4th in NSW Cup point scoring.

Who cares about Waleham. He’d struggle to beat Matt Lodge in a 40m dash. He only played FG because he was at the Dogs and Tigers when they were complete basket cases.
I don’t care about Wakeham, just mentioning he’s a decent goal kicker as the inference from previous poster was that he was a crap goal kicker.

I think Garrick will be a big loss to our culture. We are short on passionate competitors and he is a genuine leader amongst the group. Character is just as important as ability and Garrick’s character is an integral part of the club.

In saying that, it sounds like he intends to leave. Typically, players that want to stay, speak about getting a deal sorted; all we’ve heard is he’s testing the market. That doesn’t fill me with confidence that he’s looking to stick around.

It is concerning that players don’t want stay or others don’t want to join the club. IMO opinion it says a lot about the coach.
I don’t necessarily think there is a problem with players not wanting to stay. Apart from DCE who has been inconsistent at best this year the other players that will move on is purely down to $$$. The guys we want to build around for the next few seasons like Koula, Bullemor, Schmole, Hoppa, Paseka, Navale, Burbo, Walsh, Zaidas & Hart have all either signed or extended since Seibold has been here.

Recruitment I agree has definitely been a problem. Fogarty is a great pick up but if we don’t end up with Kobe Hetherington & some better back row depth it’s another fail.

Not irreplaceable on the field , but yes agree with you he’s a big part of the DNA at present.

But can’t blame him , last contract , if he gets a million for the fullback job , there’s no way we can pay a winger that money

I'm surprised that good wingers these days aren't commanding higher salaries. A winger is not only a major attacking weapon, an aerial specialist, and a defuser of high kicks he is used as a battering ram when trying to get the ball out of a team's 'red zone'.
Plus, wingers are crowd favourites, and reap in merchandising revenue for clubs.
Wouldn't you love Coates, Mark, Toupo, Cobbo... in our team?

Good point that but they don’t attract the big dollars do they ???

I think new franchises would be looking for established fullbacks as they tend to buy a 6,7,9,1
spine to build around. I can think of a couple of fullbacks that a behind esiablished 1 like AJ Brimson and Dane Laurie who have been playing great when in 1st grade. Garrick has played limited games at fullback and is a better winger than centre.

We have paid that money for worse players.
