Garrick general news thread

I think he should grow a beard, or at least let his hair get longer (at least like Bully, if not Aloiai)
Just a bit too neat, Reuben!

I have been a critic of Garrick at Centre, however, he appears to fulfilling Seib’s belief in him this year, with improved defence.

Its early days and just 3 games, however, improvement is noted.

Garrick just needs to realise he has a winger with extreme pace outside him.

A great game from Garrick on the weekend.

What I'm suggesting is that people see what they have a preconceived bias of ... (not aimed at you) ... If you believe for example a player has bad hands. then every time he drops the ball stands out in your memory .. even if stats say he makes less errors than anybody else.

Does he need to improve his defence .. yes ... is he any worse than 90% of other centres .. not IMO.
I appreciate where you're coming from. Personally, I think the whole edge needs a bit of work. It's not really an isolated 'Garrick' concern. He is big enough and willing enough and can certainly hold his own physically. I would just like to see more confidence and connection on the right edge from Ola, DCE, Garrick, and Saab. Too often they are passive and/or hesitant and get picked off. But as you correctly point out, that's happening to most teams, with the exception of Penrith and to a lesser extend Melbourne.

Garrick still a huge liability in defence.

Does not understand how to slide in defence.
When Cronulla scored to go up 18-12, DCE tells and points to Garrick to slide out as he had the inside player.

What does Garrick do - goes inside to tackle the same player as DCE, 2 on 1 then - Try Cronulla.

Does sliding defence get coached at Manly or is Garrick as thick as a plank of wood?

We don’t do coaching at manly. The players are well prepared to deal with chaos though.

When does this lengthy experiment with Garrick at centre end?, he's a better winger than Talau, and Talau is a better centre, and at this stage of his career, Koula, apart from speed, offers SFA, especially when he's on about $650k

How good is it to see Garrick back on the wing. I will keep banging on but he's a very good wing man. Knows how to find the try line and has less chance of the odd brain fart out there. D isn't really an issue for him in that position as well.

anyone feeling it?
Yep I agree, I forgot how bloody good he was on the wing, and he is getting quite involved.

My biggest fault with moving him back to the wing, is that it would likely lower his game involvement. He's one of our best players on the ball, and his year at fullback confirmed this.

That said, I am happy to eat the pie here. He's still just as involved, and he's influential no matter where he is. He's a class player. I've despised the bagging of him over the past year, often going beyond his defensive reads; he's a great guy and a great player.

The other side of things, is that if we didn't have Garrick at centre last year, we would've had to move him there this year anyway, with Talau being constantly injured. He is more experienced in defence after spending a year there. The alternative is Faulalo... Not a first grade centre.

His time at centre has made him an even better winger than before. Our best full strength backline has him on the wing, but it's great to know he can now slot in to centre, even fullback, if needed. He's always had a great attitude, but now has the confidence to go with it. Very stoked watching his evolution.

He was good, always looks to take it more personal on the wing

Just my gutty.
Give tom 2 break out games at centre, if he gets his swagger back and he will be back at fullback, which would possibly rearrange the backs again

I agree totally with this. He has become a better player for the experience but he is still a more complete winger than a centre.
