I actually don't mind the idea of giving members a say occasionally except with the choices offered it will split fans so the winning option will alienate more than half those voting as they chose something else. Of course the big problem here is the timing. They just don't have any sense of where fans' hearts are at.

I don't think it will split the fans in a negative way, no group of people will ever be 100% in agreement about anything.

We fans are impossible to please at times. We complain that the club doesn't listen to, or care about the fans; then they ask the fans to vote on what we want, and we complain that they have asked us (not referring to you personally Slide).
