Manly legend Anthony Watmough has told Yahoo Sport Australia why fans needn't worry about the potential departure of champion halfback Daly Cherry-Evans. There are three strong reasons Manly fans should not fret about life after DCE, and their names are Joey Walsh, Callum Dowell and Onitoni Large.

Watmough told Yahoo Sport Australia: "Losing someone like 'Cherry' is always going to hurt a club because he's a quality player. But what the club's done well with recruitment is they're fool-proofing for the future to make sure that fall is a little bit softer.

They are the next-Gen playmakers ready to fill the huge void left by Cherry-Evans when he finally departs Brookvale

Watmough has urged fans not to panic about a future without the record-breaking No.7. He is confident in the club's playmaker succession plan, with teenagers Walsh, Dowell and Large all progressing nicely.

Five-eighth Dowell and halfback Walsh gave us a glimpse into that future last Friday night, combining superbly to help the Watmough-coached Jersey Flegg (under-21) team beat a big, physical Warriors side in front of a hostile Auckland crowd. Rugby union convert Walsh finished with three tries inside 21 minutes, earning himself a personal highlights reel which is gaining high rotation on social media platforms

Agreed. Even when the great Fulton left for Easts, Manly remained a top side and won the premiership two years later. Its far worse when a group of top players leave all at once with little coming through. That happened in 2015-16. The Sea Eagles are far better set for the loss of DCE and even Turbo if the worst happens. Huge loss, but options are there. Will take time to adjust but the Sea Eagles still will have a team worthy of challenging.
 
well firstly as reliably informed supporters we are all going to clean up deluxe betting on manly getting the spoon next season. I am currently calling in all markers. we could crash the spoon betting market for 26

But that wasn't 'last Friday', it was the previous week. Last Sunday our Jersey Flegg team with the same halves was belted by Canberra.
Even if any one of Joey Walsh, Callum Dowell or Onitoni Large emerge as long term NRL halves, this is years away. Large is playing SG Ball U19s. Walsh has played 2 games of U21s.
I want to buy into the positive messaging, but let's be a little realistic. None of these kids can 'replace' DCE next year, or for some time to come.
Cherry was the best half in the NYC in 2009, but was sent to Sunshine Coast (our feeder club then) for a year to play against men in Queensland Cup.
Remember Latu Fainu was awarded the biggest contract for a 16 year old - by Manly. He is yet to prove himself - with Wests. There are no guarantees in junior rep stars coming through.

Maybe time to step them up to NSW Cup then, occasionally.
 
Sorry to see cherry go, but life goes on. If he can’t help us win this year I doubt he could in 2026 or 2027.

We already lost a lot of young halves who were behind him over the years: Hynes, Humphreys, Metcalf for example.

I wouldn’t put turbo at 6.

The best smoky for a 6 is right under our noses: Lehi. He has great hands and a good football brain. Keep turbo at the back.
 
The day that bloke walks back onto Brookie in his f'ing Roosters jersey is going to be one of the great Brookie atmospheres of all time. It could be like nothing I have ever seen. That's something to look forward to at least ( if he decides to play on of course.... just if of course.... he's not sure yet of course... )

I think we still have a solid enough team to get by for a year or 2 if we can just have someone in there to do a job. As mentioned, we could do worse than having Fogarty and I also don't mind the idea of Lehi in the halves.

Or maybe we get the Fainu brother package back @:D

I don’t think it will affect the playing group this year - they are all professionals and it is not like they are being asked to wear a rainbow coloured jersey 🤣🤣

I also think that some fans are in for a big shock next year when they see what this “premiership window” team looks like without Chez..

None of those players would have won a premiership alone or even with one or two. Premierships are won by having a team of quality players across the park. Manly have not had that since 2014-15. Only this year are their signs of potential. Turbo has been with us for a decade. So has Jurbo. Yet no premierships. Nathan Cleary would not have had a premiership at Manly with the players we had. DCE is a quality top rating half but he's one player. One quality player never makes a premiership winning team alone.

I just hope whoever plays 7 next year gets the same benefit of a long list of excuses that DCE was afforded by the ST faithful every time he played below par. We don't have a good 6, forwards didn't lay platform, Turbo was injured, it was windy, coach is useless, sun was in my eyes, we don't have a good hooker, opposition targeted him, etc, etc. I'll be interested to see if the level of forgiveness extends to the new boy or not. God I hope he can kick field goals too, as that seems to mask other deficiencies quite well around here

I look forward to logging into MVP thread every week next season and dropping 3 points on our new 7 because he "tried his guts out"

No Player has Ever been awarded these honors without trying their guts out feathered friend

In fact not many players in their career reach these great heights
Only the Elite ones do
And this is why they earn their Elite Dollars
