We are constantly told how good today's footballers are, but when you see these videos I'm not convinced they are any better than players were 20 years ago. And in those days they had to all play for 80 minutes.

& didnt have the refs protecting them either , it was fukn hard tough & i loved it,  the toughest & strongest  won the weak ones fell by the way side..

Mick O'Connor is up there as one of my favourite all time players not only Manly Players he was truly a great all round player.

Watching those, he and Jamie Lyon have similar playing styles, that is awesome!

i have seen that footage  a hundred times , if you look closely you will see a young ian roberts  turning & giving chase  , gibbs beats all of them  &  then you see ian roberts looking at gibbs in bewilderment..

i have a video at home called  the return of the invincibles its 1986, in one of the kangaroos first few club games they play, they take on wigan & in that side is a young ian roberts playing for them, i couldnt believe it , i didnt knw he played for wigan before south sydney  but he did,  he was one of their best that day..  i can see why england tried to get him for the 1990 ashes tour..

Man i love how the game used to be back then.  Everyone looked super fast too, things flowed.  And the bliss of not hearing the refs at all!!!
