Favourite Manly games or moments ??

Sitting high in the brewongle stand watching the 87 semi final against Easts, a real brutal contest, fatty showing how tough he really was playing on concussed and bleeding, and we win get into the GF against Canberra for another premiership.

I remember sitting on the hill watching our boys giving it to the Broncos in the late 80’s
It was Shearer’s first game back at Brookie, and he dead set copped it.
Loved Rowdy though, good man too
91 mate , shearer was in the centres with Chris JOHNS that day and cliffy Lyons cut them to pieces. Your spot on the crowd gave it to shearer that day every time he went near the ball . 26 nil and my favorite game .

Losing the 1995 grand final really hurts. Mid way through that streak of 15 straight wins Cliffy took a late intercept to shut up 25K fans at Bruce Stadium for Manly to win. Then in the following game at Brookie in front of another 25K crowd we smashed the Broncos by 20. Anyone who was around in that era will know that even beating one of those teams required a monumental effort, but Manly did it back to back.

Apart from GF wins, there are many but the one that stands out was Vs knights in 97.
The one we're Chief and Spud collided, also where Manly screwed the scrum on halfway and tooves darted the 50 metres to score under the post.
Beaver was also at his running best and had an enormous game.

I hope this is true cause my memory is getting as old as me !!

In the mideeek GF replay against the sharks wombat Eadie tackled a run away sludge Rogers front in and broke his leg

It was brutal and wombat at his best

Wonder if anyone could find the clip and either prove it happened or prove that I have manly fantasies

Late 80's to mid 90's games was a great era,the first glimpses of professionalism really shining through from marketing to training to improved/more thoughtful ways of playing the game.

Manly beating a strong Canberra outfit at Bruce Stadium with Hopper having a runaway try, Manly was now a match for the powerhouse teams of Canberra and Brisbane and not merely making up the numbers in the top 8.

The Manly Newcastle game with the famous Carrol and Harragon collision.

Both Semi's against Cronulla in 95 and 96.

Also enjoyed a game at Brookie Manly vs Roosters Friday Night that showcased the smarts of Fittler and Gould, i recall a beautiful flat face pass from Fittler during that game if i'm not mistaken.

I loved 2013 prelim against Souffs - one for the ages.

One that does stick in my mind was 1987 v Tigers at Brookie- we hadn’t quite hit our straps the Tigers were leading the comp - we were down 12 nil early then went onto to win 48 to 12 with some classic tries scored

2008 - our last ever home final, against our bogey team Saints, who had beaten us at Brookie earlier that year. From memory it certainly felt like a danger game at the time.
Nearly 20,000 packed in (great idea to scrap home finals, thanks NRL) and Saints threw everything at us early but our defence was rock solid. Eventually Beaver scored after a charge-down, then crawling on all fours and head-butting the ball, it happened right in front of us and the noise from cheering Manly fans was incredible.
We went on to decimate them 38-6 and thus began what must surely be the most dominant finals series by any team in history.

Another favourite was our 2011 semi-final vs the Cows, a second half demolition which became a joyful romp. From memory it included a few trick shot moments from Brett Stewart and co.

Think it was Ricketson who ran off Fittler ?The Roosters came out the blocks flying and no other team in the comp could have turned that 18-0 defecit into a victory.
That Gould coached Roosters team were 1 of few sides who could even challenge the Manly defence at that time.
Most teams were tricked into playing side to side and trying to go around Manly, which was handled with ease.
That Roosters team played through the line nice and direct....had to be willing to get some bruises, but almost the only way to break down that super defensive line.

That 2013 Q F comeback and win against Souths would have to rank right up there . Recall that last minute try against the Broncos in 2014 or so by Wolf Man [ great team try] to get the points and cap off a memorable match . Also that stirring comeback against the Broncos at Brookie in late season 99 to get a draw and another win against the Broncos at Brookie in 2007 or so and with Monas kicking a great long range field goal in the closing minutes to snatch the win for Manly . So many to recall really , that gutsy comeback to sink the Eels in a knock out final replay in 78 would be right up there and that 60 - nil flogging of the Saints in 94 or so , quite memorable also .

That is what i admired about that Roosters team under Gould, trying to play more direct, straight and through the line (at times) compared to previous decades that played too deep and sideways, allowing defensive structures(which were mainly sliding) to look better than they really were.

One of the reasons the Knights struggled to beat Manly during the mid 90's was due to the Johns brothers playing far too deep with long passes---not challenging the defensive line to make a decision.

2008 mid season when we beat the Raiders in Canberra with Cuthbo sent off in the first half.

I felt we would win the comp after that game.

I lived in the ACT at the time too, which made it all the sweeter.

Also the Dragons game in the mid 90s.
61-0.
On the hill as a teenager with the old man, then collecting every newspaper article on the Monday ( still have them ).

Any moment of time with our Incomparable Immortal Zachary Robert Fulton is my favourite !!!

1972 Major Semi against Easts. My first semi, up high in the Brewongle stand which was open the public. Watching the slick backline clock up plenty of metres (yards).

And then... the classic games never ceased, 1973 MW comeback against CB at Belmore, 1994 61-0, 2005 v Penrith @ Brookvale, 2013 v SS semi, 1999 draw against the Broncos, 2018 v Parra @ Brookvale, 1982 v Canterbury at Belmore,a player down, 2008 semi series, what a high! 1985 v CB @ Brooky, 1982 comeback v CB @ Brooky. Too many list and these are the ones I went to.

It’s just a little moment and I don’t even recall who we were playing but on the highlights reel in my head there’s a bit of Chez and Foz magic. We’d been pinned on our line for 4 or 5 sets and Cherry was taking yet another drop out from under the cross bar. This time he faked to boot it way down field but actually chipped it out. Foz swooped on it as soon as it had gone 10 metres and scampered to the half way line before he was dragged down. Slick. Can’t even remember if we won the match.

That reminds me of Manly vs Western Reds at Brookie which must have been 1995. I'm sure i didn't dream it, but after Reds missed a penalty goal Manly tried a short drop out from the 20m line, Manly caught the ball and immediately spread the ball & scored a try, all in the one play.

That game is on Youtube bit no sign of that try. @:(

Round 3 1988 against Parra.
Early on the Eels were up 12-6 with us going on to win 64-12.

I was there that day, it was packed.

We won the match, I was there, but I can't recall the opposition either! Might have been at the Gold Coast in 2011?

1) That 56-0 thrashing of the Roosters (my family are Roosters fans) is right up there for me.
2) PF v Souths in 2013. We had limped through the finals, 4 nil battering against Roosters, then we were down and out against the Sharks and limped through.....no-one gave us a hope v Sths....and not when we were 14 nil down early. Jamie Lyons spray was something to behold!
3) 2011 when we beat the Sharks with the final play of the game. From memory we had been down 13 nil, somehow tied it up (left foot field goal by Chez) with no time left. Sharks kicked off....Jamie Lyon chipped for Oldfield.....we scored.....I can still see the looks on the Sharks players faces....'how did we possibly lose this game?'
