Do Manly need to bring some players from NSW Cup into 1st Grade?

Missed the i st half hour and just as well , played just as poorly as i st grade .
Faualo looks a natural and good all round footy player , could come into contention as a i st grade centre , wing option if needed latter and of course can cover full back as well
Not too sure what Shu did in the i st 30 minutes but a bit pedestrian after that apart from a couple of reasonable clearing passes and got into a bit of defensive work .
Seemed just too high a mistake rate to allow the likes of Parker to maybe do a bit better but noticed James with some strong go forward but doubt any i st grade consideration yet
Humphries and Arthur may have done better earlier in the match , Woods looks like he can still be a bit useful , well at that level . Gordie seems like he can still be lively at times .
Very ordinary [ and probably in the first 30 as well ] Maybe young Hoppa started and he no doubt is a good prospect but as disappointing as the i st grade side was , not much to offer from Blacktown on yesterday's effort . Tippytoes may have been a better option then Ray Ray in the Manly ranks but being paid a bit more money no doubt a factor in him being moved on
Just watch the last 50 minutes and you'll get the gist of the first 30.

I thought it was a bad game for Arthur. Humphreys didn't seem to do much. But hard for anyone to do much with so many errors from the team.

Agree on James. Probably our best on the day.

Bully should come in for Waddell. Lawton already provides backrow cover anyways. And it should be between Bully and Brown on who makes way for Lodge. I'd keep Lawton for a few more weeks before thinking about blooding Humphries or bringing in Gordon again. But it's no suprise that every time crocker comes off we look a bit more soft in the middle and that could do with Lawton's service and defence.

In regards to Burbo, I'd limit his minutes or start him off the bench. Not ready for 80 min performances on the edge just yet. But if he continues playing below par, do we think about:

Parker for Burbo?

Solid defender. His lack of pace isn’t a big deal as he’s not in the backline anymore and probably has the same amount of speed as Burbo. Great hole runner as well which is perfect for Brooks’ ball playing style. Arguably better option than Waddell.

I do like the idea of Parker coming in. Good defender and does run good lines. He is all effort.

My 2c worth after watching Manly & B.W. games...
Burbo will have some good & ordinary games as he learns what's expected in f.g. more physical strength would help his game improve. He should stay put & learn quickly.
Waddell is uninspiring & in my opinion only a fringe first grader.
Humprey's is coming along well & will hopefully get an opportunity off the bench in F.G. this year in place of Lawton.
Gordon is probably where he should be, & or probably do well in the U.K.
Parker to stay in B.W. - too slow & clunky.
Woods stay in B.W. hopefully he's coaching the B.W. while out there with them, but always seems worried about his hair for some reason?
Tom lost his confidence yesterday & then the team all joined in as the game sank.
Jake is still a tackling machine (a slow one) but one none the less!

The only good thing about the reggies was the Dragons coach Ben Woolf finally getting a go in the NRL. I thought Flanno punted everyone from last year. But he was smart enough to retain Ben as the Reggie’s coach. He’s one of the nicest blokes you’ll meet.

Watching Sea Eagles 1st Grade team play today made me very sad and depressed.
I know that I need to see a Psychologist after watching Manly play so badly, though may be the Players do as well.
I mean who was the guy wearing the #1 Jersey, has he played the game b4??
The guy wearing the #7 Jersey looked very disoriented too.
They looked as though they didn't know each other or never played together b4.
Was there a prize for the Player that could drop the ball the most??

From very early on in my youth I realised that Manly teams not only need to beat their opposition players, they need to overcome the apalling Refereeing decisions.

I haven't seen all the Manly games since 1947, though that has to be one of the worst in the Club's history.

We should go back and clone the team that beat Penrith 70-7 in 1973.

Go Manly!!!
Penrith was not a very good team back then. Lucky for me, the manly teams I saw in the 1970s to 1990's were more consistent. Dont get too upset, its just a game. Do expect to see inconsistencies though in the current manly sides of the last decade. It is what it is.

Obviously the reserves struggled too but after that game we surely need to consider a few changes to try and freshen things up

  • Bully on the bench for Waddell. Admittedly Bully was probably the least effective of the middles to start the season, but he was one of our more consistent players last year and didn’t really deserve to be dropped. Offers something a little different with his leg speed which I think we could have used yesterday
  • Waddell to start for Burbo. Ideally Schuster would have this spot but as one of the few fans left of his he really does need to start earning it, and Waddell can hold it down in the meantime. The shine since the trials and Vegas has well and truly come off for Burbo and he needs to go
  • Humphries/GCKT in for Lawton. Love Lawton and he did a good job to start the year, but said at the time he was too similar to Croker and it’s starting to show. Time to inject some youth

I think our forward depth is pretty strong and excited to see where Lodge fits in when he’s back (definitely in the 17), but the backs are a big worry. With Garrick in the centres and Saab out we need to play 2 of Paulo/Talau/Vaega every week. Any good team will take advantage of that and we have a couple of them coming up.
i would bring brad parker back

Great to see my comments have played 'Devil's Advocate' and stirred the pot.
I'd like to get some input from Max Krilich as he is someone I respect and admire.
I remember the days when the media would interview Max to get his opinion on a current Rugby League matter.
Nick-named 'Thrower', he is one of Manly's favourite sons.
Krilich is someone whose opinion carries a lot of weight.

Can we clone the Penrith team from back then and play them on Saturday :)

As a kid growing up and playing as an old school hooker in the 70s, Max was naturally one of my great heroes. However, despite his straight-forwardness and ability to command respect, Max has never struck me as a great thinker of the modern game. He may put some people in place regarding their attitudes or behaviours, but he isn’t going to help tactically or strategically, in my respectful opinion.

I forgot about Lodge, he is an enforcer.
He could come off the Bench.
Is he injured?
When is he due to return?
When is Saab due to return?
My observation is that a few of Manly's Backs are only effective when in open space.
In defence and under the high ball they are not as effective as other teams.
Not Garrick, he is strong all-round.
It would be great to have a few Montoyas in the Manly side.
Graham Eadie, Bob Fulton, Tom Mooney, Russell Gartner, Chris Close, Noel Cleal, Dale Shearer, Michael O'Connor, Terry Hill, Brett Stewart, Steve Matai, Jamie Lyon, Peta Hiku, Matthew Ridge,
Darrell Williams, Stephen Knight, David Ronson, Phil Blake, Simon Booth, Ray Branighan, Max Brown
just to name some that come to mind.
Apologies to any omissions of the greats before my memory.

Go Manly!!!!

Have to bring back Parker. That experience going to waste in reserves. He may not be the quickest but he tackles hard and can run hard and straight close to the line.
Yes, Parker's defence is very good, he reads the play well.
In attack he can make a break and then offload to a faster player.

I would regard attitude & behaviour as being very important aspects of a Professional Sports person.
In fact it is what's missing from some of the best players and this can detract from their performance.
A player's character can be just as important as their natural talent.
Some 'just' above average players have achieved greatness due to their character, attitude and behaviour.
You'll hear Commentators say that a Player is an 'Effort' Player.

BTW, have you interviewed Max or had discussions with him about tactics, or is it just something assume??

GO Manly!!!!

Not trivialising those qualities at all. I agree they are critical. Max is old school. From any comment I’ve heard from him over the years (post-footy), he demonstrates that straightforwardness. However, I’ve never seen him make an intelligent analysis that suggests he reads the modern game well nor the psyche of the contemporary player. I believe he is a guy you could bring in to share stories and inspire this generation about our Manly history. I’ve seen nothing to suggest anymore. There is probably a good reason his coaching career never made it beyond reserves to the top echelon. But, all of the above is opinion as an outsider.
