Des out coached by Robinson tonight

I don’t know. I agree they have similar game styles but I didn’t see a particular plan other than completely out-enthuse us, dominate us physically (field position battle), dominate the ruck and target our weakest edge combination (scoring early tries down harper/guac/dce’s edge featured in all those games vs penrith, roosters, storm and rabbits). Of course they shut down trbo but you can do that when you achieve the areas listed above.

I think our attack comes down to dce and the forwards more than it does des. We know we have a good attacking structure when we are calm and confident, so des has created that. Dce, foz and the forwards need to help execute it. What does fall to des is the dummy half scenario, but hopefully segeyaro can get a go at some point)

I think we’d be in the game if we had more intent, although we absolutely do need to adjust some areas of our game plan (that defencive edge comes to mind, jake plodding comes to mind, saab and paseka not using their big frames in attack enough comes to mind).
Pretty much as you have posted here mate, thing is there's only a few teams that can execute this and maintain the energy tempo over 80 minutes....that's why we can run down teams like Cows and Dogs ect, but these other sides using this physical pattern and can keep foot on throat - we will struggle.

Nail on the head

I thought Davey ran with purpose and was busy, but his slow play-the-balls at crucial times when we were on the attack, were costly...he kept contorting himself, even when players weren't laying on him anymore.

To be fair I think that was his 2nd game back since Acl so obviously fitness will improve that

Des needs to sit down with DCE and explain to him that 3rd tackle is nothing like 5th tackle!! And if you are going to kick on the 3rd tackle, it is generally a good idea to tell somebody its coning!!

My God, that was frustrating.

Also the "Hey I've kicked 20 times to a 7 foot tall winger in a row.... maybe something will change when I do it on the 21st!!!"

-hyperbole added for annoyance level.

The right side defence is the problem, massive gaps there, I could see it on TV. They got one early and just kept coming back for more. Haper and Saab need help out there to defend that edge.

Yes, a plodder. Same as De Luis was to Manly - but Luis had better leg speed.
Davey is a stop gap forward waiting for some of the younger guys to step up.

Unfortunately Davey is nothing like the similar late starter in Brenton Lawrence who could bend the line on every run.

Maybe he will surprise later in the season - here is hoping.

Again, WTF did Des do in the off season with these soft clowns?

Why did Des bring in plodder Davey and dropped our best runner that can bend the line in Sipley.

Robinson starts the match Hutchinson yet Des ignores Lawton and picks plodder Croker.

Des needs to sit down with DCE and explain to him that 3rd tackle is nothing like 5th tackle!! And if you are going to kick on the 3rd tackle, it is generally a good idea to tell somebody its coning!!

If I am forced to post another one of these after the dogs game, it might be my last ever post!! I will be watching stronger players in the WNRL :envy:
I think this thread should called Des has again been let down by the playing group. In large parts the issue was mainly a soft attitude and no mongrel. Des and coaching team need to of course take some ownership especially for the clunky attack. As Gordan Tallis of all people said last night “Des is a winner.” and knows what he is doing.

Have any of you noticed how much slower the game is this year. NRL and refs are slowing it down big time. Back to the wrestle everyone.
Agree I think they know there is a link between the speed of the game and injuries. Not saying I am agreeing with the changes btw.

Thought Davey was our best forward before injury last year( small sample size i know)

The guy was decent last night considering he was coming off a serious 12 month injury. A bit rusty but showed more purpose than most. He's the least of our problems in the forwards, especially given he's probably one of the least paid.

Agree, however the buck stops at the coach.

Personally I don’t know how we can support Croker at hooker, and two more lightweight forwards ( Lawton & Walker) on the bench with only two big boppers.

Either Lawton moves to hooker or his dropped - he did not play anywhere enuf minutes last night - when he did at hooker he was excellent - when he moved to 2nd row - nowhere near as effective.

Agree the bench mix doesn't seem to work. Its got to be Walker and 3 big boppers. We can afford 2 utilities if we are at least holding the other team in the forwards. But given we have been smashed there the current bench mix is horrid.

Interesting take on it.
The way the game is these days, you only have to be off marginally to get points put on you.

The chooks were good last night but we weren’t that bad imo. l think at 16-0 the completions were something like 14/15 Roosters to 9/10 for us. So another 30 tackles against a fresh side who got repeat sets through their good play without us doing too much wrong.
It did look like we were back 10m but they were on us so quick. Defensively our right got picked on and that needs work, Keppie is still suspect laterally on our line.
Tom couldn’t ground DCE’s grubber that would have made it 16-6 which would’ve been a nice confidence boost.

Refs/video refs still have too much influence imo as the coaches are smarter than them.
A big non-call from Klein last night early in the second half when he should’ve binned a Chook. They dropped it coming out of their end, Parker picks it up, makes a few metres and gets tackled (zero), Roosters tackler knocks it with his foot so it’s a penalty everyday of the week but surely It’s a sinbin. It was a professional foul to reset their line which they did, how can a ref not see that?
Tedesco got spoken to at some stage regarding repeated penalties but they were all for something different, yet their desired result was the same.

If we keep our coach we'll end up like the dogs. His coaching ability is there for all to see, The team looked like rabbits in the headlights. Over rated coach in my opinion

Last year we struggled until Des stopped being stubborn and selected the Big O and Schuster. Looks like we have to lose 4 again before he wakes up this year.

Strangely... Davey is not a prop... also certainly BJ didn't bend the line on every run. BJ had great leg speed but you certainly wouldn't say he had massive post contact meters - a great worker though that is for sure. But comparing a backrower and a prop sort of doesn't make sense.

Never really knew how to pass either.

You could tell he was from South Australia - his name is Brenton.
