Manly coach Des Hasler is fired up for the new season

Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler.

Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler.

Des Hasler is angry - and Manly Sea Eagles fans should be delighted.
Like most of us in 2020, the Mad Professor wasn't quite himself.

Those close to him noticed the fire in the belly wasn't as intense as it once was and defeat didn't quite sting as hard for a man who usually wears losses heavily.

Who can forget him ripping a door off its hinges at Parramatta Stadium a few years back (the bill is still unpaid)?!
Kieran Foran.

Kieran Foran.

But the old Des is back, dropping the touchy-feely stuff and barking orders and losing his cool as the Sea Eagles look to turn around the disappointments of last year.
"Des doesn't cop mediocrity but that's what was served up at times last year," one insider told us.
"He is at his best when he walks around like he's got a wasp in his mouth. There's been a noticeable change in his demeanour over the off-season and that can only be a positive."
In other Sea-Eagles news, the great Cliffy Lyons read our piece about the prospect of Kieran Foran operating as a specialist No.14 off the bench for the Sea Eagles this year.
It's a role Lyons thrived in at the back-end of his career.
"I used to pride myself in coming into game off the bench and trying to make a difference," he said. "It prolonged my career and I think it could do the same for Kieran. I don't mind the idea of him playing off the bench. It may be the best way to use him."

Last time he ripped the door of Parra stadium, the govt stepped in and built them a new one.

Maybe he just had to get angry at brookie!

Any source for your posted article btw?

I mean this article from last year:

Not only mentions that Des paid for the door.... but that he also got heated.

Anyway... yell on Des!

That could be it. Rip a toilet roll holder off the wall, or maybe hack a big COVID-free golly on the players’ race...viola...brand new stadium.

When we lost tommy and to a lesser extent walker, des seemed resigned to next year. The forwards stopped busting a collective hump and our backline and game management was not of a first grade standard

I think he just understood last year was about experience and building for when he has access to the main men again.

Too much of manlys game is based on tom. He should be the cherry on top not the whole freaking cake.

Foran will give us direction depending on where he plays. He will straighten the attack and give us an attacking kicking game that backs will chase.

Last years was rubbish

A hooker with spark will help create chinks to work off if we get one. Tommy does the rest.

The rest play backup

Long term successful coaches continue to have success by evolving and moving with the game that is always evolving. Coaching must be a nightmare having to deal with players with huge egos some who get paid more than the coach and think they are more important to the team than the coach. The hard line approach only works to a limited extent as some of the players are sooks. You need look no further than West Tigers. I expect that Des has realized that the game got ahead of them last year. I expect its about balance. Last year some thing was not right. I know that we lost Turbo and Walker for a while but I was concerned at the number of times they bundied off in the games and and hemorrhaged points. I hope that Des doesn't tolerate that this year and we get the steel back. But we need to manufacture points with or without Turbo to have success. So we can't afford mediocracy in our spine this year.

We look to have 1, 6 & 7 covered with good depth but 9 is our Achilles heal. Good luck Desmond get this group firing. I'm a huge DCE fan but have been concerned that he has been trying to do everything on his own for far too long. I hope he can get his mind set right and trust the ball players on the other side of the ruck whether it's Schuster or Foran.

Agree hooker is a massive concern. Is our cap so tight we couldn’t go into the market even for a young up & comer?? We let go Levi and didn’t replace him. So we have 1 hooker in our top 30 squad and he can’t play round 1 and may not play at all this season?!?!

Not sure about Des being angry, but someone else may be. I've yet to see a photo of Haumole wearing a cheerful grin. Mr Paseka for example is always shown smiling benignly. I must be old fashioned, that demeanour is fine for wingers but the grumpy seriously disgruntled look is a big plus for a rugby league second rower IMHO! Turn that guy loose, lets see what damage unfolds! 🙂

I don't agree that "too much is based on Tom" is the reason, it is an over simplified reasoning that looks at stats in a face value way which draws simple conclusions.

Manly's style of play, structures and style of recruitment needs to change, or at the very least tweaked for improvement to start with.

Storm lose Slater at the end of 2018 and don't lose too much ground in 2019 and win in 2020.

The Fullback position shouldn't have as much importance to team performance in 2021 as it did in the prime years of Stewart and Slater a decade or so ago.

Overall skillsets and structures are far more advanced to the limited ways of back then(the standard stock second man plays with the fullback chiming in at speed was enough for over 50% of tries scored either through a fullback scoring or way too easily stretching defensive numbers and scoring out wide with someone else)

I agree but they have a managed game of which slater was only a part. Our game management requires indivuals to make a difference due to the lack of structure
If we have a structure then fullback could be replaced far easier regardless of the skill set
We need more from 6 and 7 to orchestrate a structure rather than them playing off tommys individualism.
Our 7 has been the consistent factor in appearances yet provides the least structure
Scarily a recent article about DCE and foz stated that dce was looking forward to having foz provide structure because he struggled having to provide that last year . It wasnt obvious

Therein lies one of our problems to a certain degree, DCE has all the skills you want in a half, has a good training attitude, is intelligent, but still lacks the constant impact throughout the season that he his financially valued at.

That is poor coaching to not snuff out bad habits in his game when they were abundantly evident in his early years(and i harped on about it back then as i'm sure others did also) along with not keeping up or being ahead of the curve in terms of game play, structures and recruitment.

It was obvious things were slipping from 2012 onwards in that regard(even if we made the GF in 2013), the last big warning sign that should of ringed alarm bells was the South v Manly Semi.(i mentioned in a post after that game that what we saw in the first 20mins will be a concern going forward into next year and onwards) The direct forward punch and size of Souths early in that game decimated Manly's defences and showed the way forward for the power game to take over with Souths, Nth Qld showing the way, with the Roosters offering a more rounded game mixed with power from 2018 onwards.

Manly need to be more rounded and advancing the game, not just trying to keep up or replicate others years later----that will only get you a bottom of the 8 position. Manly had a sense of direction and purpose from 2005 to 2007/8, stagnated and relaxed a little playing structure wise from 2009-2011 but with still enough improvements to stay ahead of the game in an overall weak competition.

Nothing really exciting has hit the radar in terms of team performance from 2012 onwards other than in 2013 a squad full of one leg injury riddled players far exceeding my expectations and reaching a GF we should never had reached.

TC, you are one hell of a stick in the mud, but I find it hard to disagree with much of what you say. Really appreciate your outside the box comments, they're good reading, even when I occasionally differ in opinion.

Since those days manly has had tooves, trent and desmondo as coach. Since then the company line has been that we need to let dce play his natural game and its manlys job to find the complimentary halves partner to allow this to happen, but on the cheap

At times ive wondered who is in charge. The length of cherries contract has meant cutting him loose and paying the necessary freight is a very bleak and long future for any coach

I agree with his skills, training intesity , role model but his reluctance to accept the responsability that comes with a career contract on top dollar is the missng quality and the most important quality this team lacks. A true leader who has a job of making others look better

His team popularity because he seems a nice guy only makes things harder for any coach

But just as dce has made a career riding the coattails of foz, snake , killer, gifty and battle hardened pack as has des to a point. Des however did some pretty good work at the dogs but also used a formula of backending contracts to flatter his results

For both coach and captain now its time to deliver with each other being a critical in eachothers success and legacy. I have more hope in des than dce personally but dessies future seems based on increasing cherries stature in the game , inflating his worth in the hope of other clubs showing interest in taking the chez at top dollar in his option year.

To do so it will look as though we let him go once he finally lived up to expectations which will seem weird

To ask foz to lead the team on a quarter of his price is shirking it in my opinion and not a plan but a hope. If foz has a good year and remains injury free his price will double at least and will become a blake green and put us back to square one
