Confirmed: PNG Team Coming 2028

2028 season so a while yet for the existing clubs and the new franchise to come to terms with
Not as promising in the west with all of the delays and a bit of uncertainty with the proposed model and now the current W A government apparently seeking or being asked for some commitment
Like the lateral line of thinking and planning with the proposed South N Z island consortium and trying to take in a fairly wide sweep of the pacific region
Bemusing with one estimate , population wise of the P N G regions , read where it could have been underestimated recently by as much as a few million people

Not mentioned in these articles, but in SMH they had "As a sweetener to sign with PNG, players and staff will be granted tax-free status. That will allow a marquee signing on a $1.2 million deal to save up to $550,000 per annum."

This is a bit dodgy, it makes nearly as much of a joke of the salary cap as The Chooks.

This is a Geo-Political decision to try and keep China out of PNG. Nothing more, nothing less. Port Morseby is a very dangerous place and there is no way in this world I would relocate my family there. I went there in April and it was 35 degrees and 90%+ humidity. Given the Comp starts beginning of March I see serious heat issues and likely that games will be played in 20-minute quarters.

Horse has bolted already on China. Joint is a dump, I worked there for many years. No security, no laws, they just run a muck. Would not take my family there to live for a bet, it is a dangerous sh1thole.. Absolute disgrace that Albo has tipped in $600 million. It will fail.

For context it is $60m per year for 10 years. Australia's foreign aid/development budget, by comparison, is several billion dollars every single year.

It may fail. But as for safeguards, at least they had the foresight to add an exit clause:

"A landmark $600 million deal for a Papua New Guinea team to enter the National Rugby League comes with an escape clause allowing the Australian government to immediately terminate the agreement if PNG strikes a security or policing pact with China or other rival nations over the next decade."

I'm less concerned on this as they will absolutely need near double the cap to attract players.

600k after tax to live on the beaches, in the eastern suburbs or the Shire or a mill tax free to go to Port Moresby.

I'll take the 600k thanks.

Guys aint taking families over there and even young guys will be hesitant to go. Would you give up being a 20 star on big money going out in Syd getting all that attention to go live in a compound in Port Moresby.

I think they will be scraping the barrel paying overs for players struggling to get decent money elsewhere or youngsters struggling to get a start elsewhere.

This , 150%

Nothing to with football , all to do with politics.

It’ll be a disaster in the short term.

Port Moresby is considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

Who, with a young family , will be mad enough to move there , even with top dollars.

May have worked based in Cairns with a few “ fly in , fly out “ games with loads of security.

Based in POM, no chance

Having lived and worked in POM(Port Moresby) for 8 years, all I can say is, watch the money evaporate, it’ll be an absolute honeypot for all the usual suspects to dip their hands into; I predict that if 10% gets into the pathways programs it’ll be amazing.

Albo has just given a lot of our taxpayer money to the PNG pollies and hangers-on; but hey, it makes Albo a big man in PNG and isn’t that what the guy is all about.

Albo won't be around for much longer. I doubt you'll find PV wasting money needlessly. He is an astute businessman. While I rarely agree mixing politics with sport I see it is an investment in a slightly more secure future for Australia.

Living in a compound in a sh1thole country hasnt stopped big European players signing into the Saudi league.
Its all about the money!

Same same but different right?

Saudi is ethical reasons, cultural fit and obscene money.

PNG safety concerns, lifestyle considerations and maybe double your take home pay.

I get the point but and extra 200k in pounds a week is different to and extra 300-400k a year
