A scrimmage was (or maybe still is) a light form of scrummage. But a scrimmage can also mean a fight and nothing to do with football.
A 20th century style RU scrum, or even a rugby league pre 1980s scrum, is what was envisaged by the word scrummage or scrummaging.
What rugby league (20th century version of the play-the-ball) and American football ('snap'/'down') have after every tackle is more what scrimmage meant. Scrum-lite if you like. Scrimmage is still a word used in American football.
