There is no one thing to fix, no instant recipe. It taks time to develop belief in themselves and many players will come and go before manly have that belief again.
The coach seems to be the big target . My opinion is varied on the coach. He is green, has had a really unlucky run with injuries and has mixed results. His team mostly look up for it. They come out prepared mentally but that belief is shallow and easily tested. But they seem prepared at kick off. That is his doing.
He has a plan but
1 im not sure if that plan suits the squad
2 im not sure he really knows his players games
3 maybe he lets underperforming players off too lightly
But the players do seem to want to play for him but not necessarily win for him. This is n the coach
Where i get unsure on what the problem is when it comes to the captain. Our captain, also our half and chief playmaker has no idea about game management. Zilch. Barret knows that too because he got green to help out. The interview green did when he first signed indicated barret needed green to run the team.
Cherry has no patience and is in charge when the players take the field. He sets the team culture on the field and in my opinion struggles.
So back to barret, who made him captain. I know we had politics galore that cherry was up to his neck in ,but should he be setting the team culture onfield when he is quite lax about the 1% plays that define a team
Momentum is a large part of Nrl and knowing how to absorb, repel and initiate momentum when required makes the top teams tick. We are awful at this.
For now we need cherrys boot and team defence to change momentum , but its not in the plan or isnt followed if it is ,as well as some luck . Cherry on the surface has the best kick but uses it poorly. His choice of kicks have no thought about the game. Its like he isnt aware of the game, the momentum , the other players . He just does what cherry does.
Captains require respect and while im sure the players respect his skill set and are often in awe of what he can do, im sure he will always have some players pissed at they way he goes about his work.
He tries hard, his defence shows how hard he plays but he is just nor real quick between the ears in footy talk.
Id give cullen , api , hastings and green a shot in the halves before id sack barrett. If barrett doesnt give that a go, then he cant make the tough calls and then he has to go
Unless we unearth a superstar number 6 who will play for peanuts we will win squat while cherry is the main man
