Cap Space

TPA

I understand that, but TPA's mean the cap ceiling is limitless to the upside (hello Wayne). However, I don't know how the NRL allocate back ended contracts to the cap. Do they pro rata contract values for the term, or do they allow unders and overs through the years to run?

Not sure, but logically it must be what is actually payable in one season ... otherwise there is no benefit to the tactic ... and Manly wouldn't have been able to build the team we did.

What you say is possibly correct, however our roster apart from Uate, falls down quite sharply after that, especially in the backs

In the AFL they talk about having a good bottom 6 which in the NRL would equate to a good bottom 4. To be a successful team you need these bottom tier players to contribute. The Melbourne Storm gets quite a bit from their bottom tier players on a consistent basis, which is why they are always competitive. I thought this year that Tapau and Jake had to do too much of the heavy lifting, with too many passengers.

Manly has HEAPS of cap space due to matai and snake.

Vs

Manly has NO cap space due to upgrades.

Maybe the truth is somewhere in between, but that won’t sell any papers.

Matai and Stewart were never part of our 2018 cap calcs as their deals had ended and were presumably soaked up elsewhere.
Not sure what you mean? (i am very sleep deprived - triplets are rough!). It's well documented that Matai & Stewart were part of our 2017 roster and salary cap. Surely now that those contracts have expired, some significant cap room has freed up to use elsewhere?

With back ended contracts, and TPA's, that is no certainty either. The futility of us poor sausage roll eating fans knows no limits.

Let’s face it , us sausage roll loving fans know **** ALL!!

It’s the one thing Zorba got right ( but should never have said).

I think we have more cap space than people think. We obviously have at the very least enough coin to match whatever Pearce was on at the Rorters. Otherwise why would we even bother officially showing interest and negotiating with him.?

This is my belief also .
Just on top of this theory the players lost led by Lawrence/Myles would also be close enough to those gained....
It’s then we add the fact the cap has increased by 2 million that I see a distinct advantage to cap space.

Be funny if we jagged Pearce AND Joel Thompson.

I could get a real stiffie over that.

Unless we have access of the auditors- we have no Exact numbers bar what BS the media feed - who can create any number to fit an agenda.
The easiest way to see if Manly have more money under the cap - if Pearce signs -we do...
If he does not - we don’t.
My opinion is we do and he has (will)
Done deal. Hope/wish there was enough left for Thompson.

Almost all would have gone to upgrading the Turbos from being paid peanuts to the $5m 4 yr deal they signed.

No disrespect to Tommy as I am a fan.................but surely he must be one of the most overpaid players in the NRL based on his current offerings.

We really have gambled that he becomes the player that the potential is showing us.

Been said many times before but players have clauses that stipulate an increase to match the salary cap increase should it change, especially those on 3-4 year deals.

DCE, Walks, Taupau would have chewed up a large chunk of the increase just through that.

Some players do and some don’t.
It’s not an automatic increase on every contract at all...only a select few.
If every contract had this clause....even if the cap hypothetically jumped up to 15 million it would be irrelevant - as the money would simply increase the current players with nothing left over and the teams like Newcastle, Eels would have the same roster - not an extra 5 players with more to come.
It’s good to see Manly at least be able to buy 1 marquee player with this extra cash and I think they have....the question imo is - will there be enough for another key player in the forward pack??

I reckon he nearly earns 900K a year (some of that in TPA's anyway). In future years this should be a bargain
