He was overlooked for the Manly job but Sea Eagles assistant coach John Cartwright is ready to work with Des Hasler

THE man overlooked as Manly coach has broken his silence to reveal an unwavering support of recently appointed Des Hasler.

John Cartwright — a leading contender to replace outgoing Trent Barrett — told The Daily Telegraph Hasler had “as good a record as any modern day coach.”

Manly chairman Scott Penn considered Cartwright long and hard before opting for Hasler on a three-season contract.

Cartwright remains contracted at Brookvale for the next two seasons.

Speaking from America, where he is currently enjoying an off-season holiday, Cartwright said he was “looking forward” to working with Hasler.

Hasler and Cartwright both came through the Penrith junior system, Cartwright debuting in 1985, two years after Hasler left for Manly.

The pair toured together with the Ashes-winning 1990 Kangaroos through England and France and also competed at State of Origin level for NSW.

“I haven’t spoken with anyone but I’ve known Des since I was 15 years old,” Cartwright told The Daily telegraph.

“He has as good a record as any modern day coach.

“We toured together and I have played with him. I would look forward to working with him.

“Des and I also played together for NSW. I’m contracted at Manly for two more years.”

Cartwright remains close mates with Barrett.

A former Titans head coach and NSW and Cowboys assistant, Cartwright is well respected and regarded by the Manly playing group and would prove invaluable for Hasler.

Hasler said he too was ready and excited to work alongside Cartwright and Manly’s other assistant coach, Chad Randall.

“They are both good fellas,” Hasler said. “I have played with and against John and I have coached Chad, I have worked with Chad.

“Both are good human beings, good fellas.”

Randall is also contacted at Manly until the end of 2020.

Manly players return to training on November 5, Cartwright will be back a week earlier.

The Sea Eagles have two head coaches contracted with club officials hopeful of a resolution within the next fortnight.

Penn has previously stated he would not place the players in an awkward and embarrassing position by having them return to training to be confronted with two head coaches.

“Trent resigned — it was his decision — but he still employed by the club,” Penn said. “As a club, we need to protect our interests and, as a club, that is exactly what we are doing.”

Good cop, bad cop. Des can rev them and Carty can share the beers and tears with them.
This is one of my concerns with Carty. He strikes me as the kind of assistant that is happy to just be an assistant. I think after the Titans gig he realised that he would be long odds to ever get a HC position again and got comfortable just being in the background. That's all well and good but it doesn't do much for switching our players on; seeing a laid back larrikin, beer in hand, taking the losses in his stride does nothing for the culture about the place. I'm sure he is a good fella, but he did coach out defence last season...

A relatively young (by coaching standards), motivated and driven "coach is waiting" is the kind of the person you want to have, taking orders off the big boss. But hey, Carty did something right in NQ so maybe I will eat my words. I hope so!

I believe that was the culture since tooves left, don't care who or how it started but Barrett allowed it to continue and that won't happen under Des.

Mentioned this a while back. Cowboys Chairman Lawrence Lancini told my brother a month or so ago Cartwright was just as instrumental as Green in the Cows getting their first flag.Said Green was good coach but Cartys experience tied the group together. Really wanted to keep him.
Im pretty sure he worked with Ricky Stuart when they lost the 04 GF and was Lang’s right hand man in the 03 premiership win.
All in all a damn good record as an assistant except under the SuperCoach the last couple of years.

Barrett was a total novice and out of his depth and I reckon it’s a bit harsh to pin a lot of our troubles on Cartwright .The head coach sets the tone and to expect the assistants to pull the ship together is asking too much. Just listening to those dreaded press conferences would be enough to finish anyone.
All this stuff about him being the defensive coach is a bit overdone. Defence is 90 percent attitude at this level and if the head coach has no idea tactics wise, man management wise or discipline wise that attitude will go straight out the window under pressure, regardless of who is supposedly coaching them to tackle.

I’ve only heard good reports from people who know him. Didn’t want him as head coach as we need a tyrant like Des to whip these guys into shape but have no real problem with him as assistant.

My outlaws know most of the cowboys off field team, including lancini and they have heard identical. Years ago they also had paul green when he played for the cows in the same unit complex. Less glowing of him then, but that was years ago. Im sure he grew up like we all kinda do

You mean like Brad Arthur when he was here? As we found out that has its drawbacks too... he fed dissension in the ranks for his own benefit and to the detriment of the club (although I must admit I enjoyed when it backfired on him)

Let’s face it - the best assistant coach we could have, head and shoulders over everyone else, is Tooves.

Over to you Lyall to convince the Penns...

Is that the bloke who composed baby elephant walk, moon river and the pink panther?

Des is a strong head - I doubt we will see Cartwright out on the drink with the players with Des at the helm.....
Remember when des was here previously during our golden period? He had private security (some army dude) go everywhere with the players after games.
I can see des doing that again, hope the boys enjoyed Gladstone they won't be seeing that again mid season.

I think Randall has thay kind of way about him. Watching him he likes to bark orders at the boys and speaks like their captain when running water

Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure you're right @Briza. Des did have a private security guy and I'm delving into my memory to try and recall him

I doubt the boys will see Gladstone again...ever :shake:

Carty fine he coached alot at rep level also. He and des played together. I be honest its great this happened time to get back to business and making us hated again

Couple of blokes I know played under Green in the premiership sides at Wynnum. Both said he was good coach but in the Madge mould and might find it hard to keep the playing group long term. Maybe we saw a bit of that this year but more likely it was their incredibly old roster ( average 29). Expect them to go better with some young blood next season.

I'm enjoying having an owner with a voice again, Scotty Penn although unpopular has listened to the fans and is making some tough decisions. It's nice to finally start seeing action and not copping ****

I think we can all see his passion for the club. It was just a matter of Lyall making it clear to him that he needs to be actively supporting the club and not just in the background.
