Can we take some positives? Can we get a grip?

Ok I'm going to get hammered from some for this thread. But can we get a grip? It is Round 1. You would think from some we have lost 100 nil to the Bears 4th grade team. Execution was off, absolutely. But our defence tonight was very impressive. Defence is what typifies attitude and tonight we showed up and repelled and repelled and repelled. We can build on that. In the first half we had 2 chances, we scored one and should have scored another.

Yet some are ready to hang the entire club for it. Let's take the positives out of tonight, take a chill pill and look forward to round 2.

I really enjoyed the game.🙂

It was really intense and all the players were there till the 80th minute.

The ball security is easily fixed with drills.

The tackling the ball and not the man, is easily fixed with drills.

41% possession and 7 line drop outs to only lose by 1 try - fair effort

It's just a matter of time for the new combos to gel

Myles must be dropped though - he looked sluggish and really not interested 😎

Yes but I have been saying the same things since round 1............2016. Yet here we are with the selection wheel of fortune turning up the same crap dummy half, Lewis Brown & even Myles. This not a "just now" round 1, 2017 situation, this is now more than a year.

^ If ball security was that easily fixed you'd think we might have fixed it over the last couple of seasons. We haven't.
Anyway, since this is a positives thread, I thought Kelly looked good for his first NRL game and I was very impressed with Tommy T's run out of the in goal, bumping of Semi R and a few other Eels on the way. Turned out he'd stepped on the line first, but still…

  1. We showed plenty of ticker - that's a must and we have it.
  2. Kelly made a good debut
  3. Uate looked good
  4. Tapau had a couple of loose carries early but went really well - played hard and did plenty of work
  5. Jake was simply awesome
  6. Darcy will be back soon and will improve the side.
Things to work on:
  1. Holding the ball
  2. Tom needs to think run first, pass second (same issue as last year). He also needs to work on grubbers and general defensive positioning
  3. Api same old story - not in my starting side. Bring in Hastings.
  4. Lewis Brown should go
  5. Jorge needs to cut out the sloppy plays but can pull off a hit
  6. Myles must lift or be dropped. Tom Amone to be given a shot if he is dropped

spot on!

Defense was okay but the eels really didn't show a lot in attack. I feel they didn't really go as hard as they can, they just controlled the game and did what they had to. We had the same problems we did last season, which is what has caused me the most grief. I think we're in for a very long season.

I personally think we just lack the cohesion in attack to win against stern opposition so early in the year. You can train and train and train but nothing can prepare the team like playing in match conditions. It will come together with time. In wet conditions against a resilient side like the Eels, you have to respect the ball and put the fancy football in the rack for a day and win ugly.

I would be much more concerned if our defence and/or attitude looked off because that is harder to fix. We hit harder and tougher than the Eels in defence and had a lot less petrol to do so. It was just our execution that let us down and gave the Eels a mountain of ball.

I'm disappointed (obv) but understand that we will definitely get better.

Ball control will get better as will the combinations. Parra were supposedly a top 8 team last year plus they got a few dodgy helping hands so all in all, going down by 8 is ok for a first hit out.

Need to see improvement though but I'm sure the players feel this more than I (we) do.

I was hoping someone would hear Fitlers comments when he was ragging on us after a parra try...then go over and throw him off the field.

Wasn't a terrible first game. Marty was terrific shame we dont have another 2 like him. Korisou was great and jake and thought Kelly had a great first game. Just no ball and too many errors. Liked our attack at times. Side looks way better than last year, only rd 1.

Tom needs a lot of work at the back and would love Barrett to bring in cullen or hastings for Brown. Darcy cant wait til he comes back to replace lawrence. And myles offers very little.

Oh yes, another season of"time to gel"or"it's only round 1"This was a BS performance. No excuses. The club needed to come out and make a statement today.Everything that happened today was predictable to anyone that has half a brain.Yes,Kelly looks good,if for nothing else than to keep the Wright non brothers out of first grade. But the forwards, other than Trbojevic, were soft.

Kapow soft?
You are joking.
The only soft forward today was Mr Plod, who is over the hill. Let's hope he has a GPS to get to Blacktown.
