Bye bye Bears - again, killed off before they were resurrected??? And any other mixed metaphor

The chairman of the failed Perth bid has broken his silence on having a proposal to enter the NRL rejected at the 11th hour, claiming his consortium couldn’t absorb a multi-million dollar licence fee but was still open to returning to the negotiating table.

ARLC chairman Peter V’landys was believed to be stunned when the consortium didn’t offer a licence fee as part of the proposal

Not knowing the ins and outs and kickbacks of a new team, but....
Shouldn't a licence fee be known to both parties before starting off.

NRL: The licence fee will be $20 million.
Wannabes: Fair enough.

I mean, I don't 'offer' a fee when I get my drivers licence renewed.
Why does everything nrl involved always have to sound so amateurish?

Fair point. Sounds like the old blind auction method.
Reminds me of when I replied to an invitation to get a better insurance deal, the friendly dude on the phone went through a few questions then asked what I'm paying now. I said waddya need to know that for?! Clearly their strategy is to offer a little lower than whatever you're currently paying, even if they actually can afford to charge less than that. Left me thinking it was sly profiteering wrapped up as a hip, caring company.

(Bit off topic but hey its the off season)

It would be good if they could return to life on the Central Coast,* however those other cockroaches, aka the Roosters (the house sitters who take over your home), might have something to say on that subject.

*That area needs a RL team of its own

No Terry, never! As a born and bred Coastie, I will not now, nor ever, support the Central Coast Bears!

You are 100% correct however, we do need a “team of its(our) own”. Also, we would need to tell the rorters to F, well and truely, Off; they’ve got their grubby hooks, deeply into our local juniors.

The Coast needs a stand alone team and if you don’t think we could fill it with local juniors, you’d be dead wrong, lots of Coasties playing FG now, both NRL & NRLW.

Hey, I agree with you on the points you raise.

Sadly I don’t think the Central Coast will get a team of its own, unless they do team up with an entity like the Bears.

I have property up there and lived there for many years, so I understand what you’re saying.

They should re-name the Bears as the Leeches.

Ever since the Northern Eagles failed and Manly was resurrected in the NRL while Norths went into the NSW Cup ... the Bears consortium has been trying to leech onto talks of every single new franchise with their "Call them the Bears" BS.
They did it to us but they still blame us for the failure when in fact it was there CEO at the time Mark Cannon who I might add isnt even a bears junior, who was backstabbing everyone behind closed doors

So they shat the bed the ol' bears. Can't say I'm surprised. They were given a shot and tried to nickel and dime Saint Peter. The fkn disrespect lol

It does start to lay some foundations on what a NRL club may be worth, if you were ever looking to sell . With contractural Income , sponsorship, etc etc the souths and Manly franchise acquisitions are really paying off, especially the Manly

Looking like becoming a cash cow in the future too considering

historical transactions also with the land

**** why didnt we buy it.

Hindsight can be such a perfect thing, but in a lot of ways Manly as a club probably would have been better off in the long run taking Ribot's offer to join Super League.

Edit: I do know that with our connection to Arko and Bozo, Manly was never going to join Super League. But I do think we wouldn't have even had the Northern Eagles debacle had we joined the rebel competition. They wanted 4 Sydney teams representing the 4 points of the compass. Note that they went after Manly and not North Sydney..... :nerd:

Western Reds aside ... how many clubs from the SL were forced to merge?? All the mergers ended up involving ARL teams - Manly and Norths became the Northern Eagles. Wests and Balmain became the Wests Tigers while St George and Illawarra became St George Illawarra. No SL team was forced to merge, though they did get rid of the Mariners and Rams as well.

Seriously why should a new franchise be lumbered with their sh%t history. Not saying this just because its the bears but if they were moving the Sharks, Sea Eagles or Eels, it would be the same.
I'll tell you why, it's because The Bears have fooled everyone, including the NRL, that they have something like a quarter of a million fans eagerly waiting for their resurrection, never heard so much bull**** in all my life, not forgetting to mention the myth that is North Sydney Oval, by far the worst ground to watch RL, yet they go on about as if it's some hallowed ground, FMD

We were never going to join Super League whilst Arko was president of the ARL, if he wasn't president there was a good chance we would have joined as whatever grants we got from the Leagues Club were diminishing as the years went, and as the premier club at the time, the ARL would have collapsed, as all the good teams were swinging towards SL

For the past 25 years, the Bears have been circling like vultures just waiting to pick at the carcass of a vulnerable team.

I would’ve been surprised if the PNG bid didn’t stack given that it’s backed by $600m
of our taxpayer dollars.
Soft diplomacy by the Aust government. Was surprised Perth was even talked about ahead of PNG, noting the governments VERY strong interest to win PNG hearts and minds.
