Breaking News NRL referees are Crap

Most ex-captains seem to say they argue to get their team a rest, so they brought in the new rule stopping the captains from doing that; but then the refs allow 'referee' smith to have a high tea with them when Melb get penalised making the other teams/coaches/fans annoyed.

.

But it’s Cam. The best player to have played the game. (apparently).

NRL to appoint Belinda Sharpe to referee Brisbane-Bulldogs clash

The NRL has turned to a female match official to fix its refereeing crisis.

Belinda Sharpe will create history in Thursday night’s crucial clash between Brisbane and Canterbury at Suncorp Stadium when she becomes the first female referee to control an NRL game.

Her appointment comes just a week after the NRL’s head of football Graham Annesley revealed his concerns about the lack of depth in the officiating ranks.

Sharpe, 31, is a former newspaper sub-editor on the Courier Mail newspaper who has been a rising star in the refereeing ranks as a part-time touch judge for several years.

She was appointed to the full-time squad 10 weeks ago, having spent the off-season working on her fitness levels.

“This is a historic moment for the game and I’m so happy for Belinda,” Annesley told The Daily Telegraph.

“She has worked extremely hard, served her apprenticeship, and earned her elevation on merit. She will be judged on her performances just like any other referee.

“Both Belinda and Kasey Badger are pioneers who have forged a pathway for the many talented women who will follow in their footsteps.”

Sharpe was informed of her promotion to work as pocket referee alongside Ben Cummins at Suncorp Stadium in a match shown in prime time on Fox Sports and Channel 9.

“I’m thrilled — this is every referee’s dream to work in the middle in NRL,” Sharpe said.

“I became a full-time ref in May and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I’m really excited.”

Sharpe, who officiated the Broncos’ pre-season trial against Wynnum back in February, says the burden and spotlight won’t be a problem.

There’s pressure being a match official in any capacity,” she said.

“My experience on the touch line will help with that. I understand the level of responsibility.

“I’m working with Ben Cummins. He’s the most-capped referee currently in the game and I’ve learnt a lot from him already.

“It’s no different to the players. We’re all under pressure. That’s the job.

“You just try to do the best job you possibly can. That’s the approach I’ll be taking into the game.”

The NRL have dead set become a basket case. Don’t get me wrong I having nothing against a female officiating the game, but talk about pressure for her. Throw a rookie into their first NRL game, first ever female to do so, at Suncorp against the Broncos and as a former QLD journo for the courier mail and expect her to “fix it’s refereeing crisis”.
Broncos by plenty....
Good luck Belinda :sweating:

The players will attempt to ref that game Thursday....wish her well and in actual fact, can't be much worse then some of these other muppet's with whistles....and then we have the bunker, some of the inconsistencies here are a joke - like they chop and change calls on the exact situations....

I'm very happy we are not playing the Broncos this weekend.

Annesley missed a trick here. Should’ve gone for a lingerie ref. That would have the players standing at attention.

PS...for the crazy nutjob PC brigade out there, no I’m not diminishing women and applaud Belinda’s promotion. We need better refs regardless of gender.

I really hope that female refs work. I trust that players will give them a lot more respect than they give male refs, with Walker being amongst the worst offenders.
If female refs don't work, then what next?
Obviously the NRL's fallback position is to technology. After all, we all know how well the vidiots are working and that throwing many millions of dollars to get decisions 100% correct is achievable....
So, my suggestion is:
Vidiot drones. They fly above the play and can rule conclusively on forward passes, 10-metre offsides, knock-ons etc. Affix a megaphone to the drone so that someone in the bunker thousands of kilometres away can then yell at the players: "milking, surrender, dominant".. and all those important calls that the refs currently make.

As long as she is competent and impartial, I'm happy with the choice. Too many of these NRL refs we have seem to have axes to grind and their competence level is just not up to standard. Bring back the one ref system. It was far more effective

There is not a doubt in the world that drones will be an added support for NRL games in future. But perhaps not for five years yet. But the issue is not the technology, but who is watching the film. Maybe video refs should be replaced by computer assessing Good idea though.

She is a Queenslander so even if she tries to be impartial when officiating Queensland teams her default support for her State will unsurprisingly show through.
Ask yourself: how would you referee a Manly match?

That is the biggest issue with the current referees. There are 2 referees required for each NRL first grade game, but there simply aren't enough competent or experienced referees to go around, thus we are stuck with a bad bunch. I mean, there are some NRL refs who under a one ref system would only ever see first grade while running the touch lines, such is their level of competency and experience. But because there is the need for 2, suddenly they are in charge of games other than just running the lines and putting their flags up.

Who actually came up with this 2 referee thing in the first place? And why do I get the feeling it was a referee who was more looking out for the interests and job security of his fellow whistle blowers than they were looking out for the best interests of the game itself?

How would I referee a Manly game?

Well, if I was out there this Sunday at Brookie, first thing I would do is put the entire Worms side on report for being dumb enough to sign with that rabble. Then I'd send off any Worm who tackled anywhere above the waist and below the thighs. Then I'd have security escort the Dalai out of the ground. He doesn't deserve to grace the holy land.
