Trent Barrett spray the wake-up call Manly Sea Eagles required

Trent Barrett isn't one to rant or rave. So when the usually mild-mannered coach gave his Sea Eagles a rare spray, it was all the more effective.

Manly players were sheepish when they returned to the sheds after blowing a 20-6 halftime lead to the then last-placed Wests Tigers last weekend. They threw away not only two competition points but also a potential top-four finish that came with them, again leaving them walking the finals tightrope. It was their third loss from four matches and was everything their previous second-half performance - a stunning come-from-behind victory against the Roosters - was not.

Barrett wasn't happy. Asked about his address, one of his few blow-ups since taking over on the northern beaches, playmaker Blake Green said he would need to "filter" the spray to make it appropriate reading.

"Yeah, it was a decent one," Green said.

"He's got some in him and it was a decent one.

"He doesn't rant and rave, he's just direct with his feedback, He tells the truth and tells it how it is … (It wasn't) disbelief, just disappointment. We put ourselves in a good position with 40 minutes to go and then we let ourselves down.

"He highlighted that everyone needs to play their role and need to keep things going, keep playing footy and keep applying pressure. We didn't do it."

Teammate Jake Trbojevic added: "No he wasn't (happy). I don't think anyone was very happy, it was a disappointing game to blow that halftime lead.

"He's had a couple (of sprays). He doesn't do it very often.

"We could see he was frustrated and everyone was."

It has been a big year for Barrett. He came into the season under pressure after taking over from local legend Geoff Toovey, overseeing a 13th-placed finish in his rookie year. Most pundits expected a similar result in 2017 but, if the Sea Eagles can reclaim their early-season form, a top-four finish isn't beyond them.

Such has been the transformation that he has been linked with a coaching switch to this week's opponents, Canterbury.

"They worked it out on purpose, I'm telling you, these rumours come out on purpose (at this time)," Green quipped.

"We haven't even spoken about it, to be honest. A lot of that stuff, we don't even pay too much attention unless we get told about it by Trent. I don't pay attention to anything else I hear."

Barrett is contracted to Manly until the end of next year but his players want him to stay put longer than that.

"He's a great coach, I love playing under him. I hope he's my coach for forever," Trbojevic said.

"He's brought the boys together, he's really good tactically. He's very passionate, you can see it means the world to him so you obviously love playing for him.

"It's been good that we can turn it around this year because everyone was giving it to him even when we always had faith in him.

"It's good he's starting to get the credit he deserves. It's good to see."

They worked these rumours to come out at this time on purpose......
Interesting !!

Love to hear Jake wants to play under Barrett forever! Thats a huge rap. Go TB, the boys needed a good spray..

even though im still gutted about Tooves treatment, really liking TB as our coach. Hes got the goods me thinks that

From Jake:
“There is a lot to play for and we have got to be excited about what is to come. We need to go into these last three rounds really positive and hopefully have a few good performances to make the finals.

Man, this guy is a true champion. So happy he's Manly through and through. Look forward to watching him in the mighty maroon and white for many years to come. And his bro too. And the next turbos... Whoop! How lucky are we?!!

I for one am looking forward to the remainder of the season. Still a long way to go and lots will happen no doubt. Whatever the outcome its been one helluva ride and im proud to support this club. GO MANLY. I BELIEVE!!

Lol - everyone wants to work for a bloke ho doesn't know jack ****. Can never point a finger..

There have been a lot of words said since Sunday and the players know that their actions will determine a turnaround in performance on Sunday. I think without a doubt the fact that TB has not yet re-signed is a bit unsettling for the team. Without knowing the facts. I expect that TB is waiting like the rest of us to see the outcome of the cap investigation and the club is probably not prepared to finalize any contract until the outcomes are decided. This is why it is urgent that the NRL get this finalized one way or another. I think if TB does re-sign it will be a big step forward for this young team.

Jake is like Ned Stark from Game of thrones, the most honorable person going. If Jake says somethings its guaranteed to be the truth, the honest truth. And if he rates him that highly he must be a great coach. Unfortunately ill have to watch a replay of this weeks game (off to watch raiders and panthers) but I want to see a big hard working 80 minute win with a smacking of the dogs. Show your coach you believe him.

We must remember that the side is still incredibly young, in time this will be us

Sure young until they start performing .................and they then move on because someone makes them a ridiculous offer or we end up with salary cap pressures!

There should be a rule you cant go off to a better contract until you've given us the equivalent number of good years as you gave us bad years!!

(there are professions that do this ;-)

Why don't u start a thread on all the players and who u think their fictional characters may be.
It seems really interesting.

Why dont I do you... hang on I dont think there is a fictional character for you. No one has made a fictional character on an arrogant talking dog.

Earlier this year after a dodgy first half their was footage of Barrett kicking an esky. Let's just say it wasn't a great esky kick, in fact, a duckling could have kicked the esky harder. I thought after watching that perhaps Baz needed to attend an angry coach spray training course.
When eskys are kicked the lid should fly off followed by the assaulted object slamming sideways to the floor with ice and gatorade sliding across the dressing room. I was disappointed in the kick.
This season I've warmed to TB a lot. He seems to have united our players. I hope the spray was a lot harder that the earlier esky kick, I hope he threw it at someone's head, and that our team pulls their fingers out and play like Manly men this Sunday.

Thanks but no thanks ,just not into that stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
(What about the hound ?)

Good on TB, it does say he doesn't do it often but how could you not drop fbombs left right and centre after that second half.

I was full of envy watching him during the presser thinking i wish i could be that calm after a loss like that. Seems like he unleashed what he thought before the presser.

The whole excuse of this team is young and inexperienced isn't good enough. We were playing the Tigers ffs, where is their collective experience? Their two best players are leaving at seasons end and the rest only make up the numbers as far as quality goes.
