Bargain Halfbacks

Walker is not a bargain halfback now, let alone soon. He was poached from the Broncos and was a highly touted junior. I think because he got dropped last year, people assume he must be cheap but the Chooks paid good money to get him and his contract was upgraded when he burst onto the scene as the best young playmaker in the game 2-3 years ago.

He was shopped to the Dolphins just 12 months ago, well May last year and was told he was not wanted in June last year.

I'd suggest he is on around $400K.

Luckily for him he bounced back and will get good money after his current contract ends after 2025.

In what way?

Hastings, Flanagan & Boyd haven’t been part of a premiership winning team (Neither have Moses, Hunt & SJ) so I don’t see how you can say DCE & Hynes haven’t been more successful than them all?

Hynes - Dally M Winner two years ago.

DCE - Origin Career has been enormous. Club career since 2013, not blaming him for one second, but 2 finals appearances in 10 seasons doesnt cut it when comparing to Cleary and Cronk.

The point of the post wasnt to "bag" anyone but just to point out the 7 position might be over rated and often under achievers are getting big $$$ for little results.

Yeah he had a form slump but he was still a rookie and I think most believed he would end up back in first grade and be elite. I don’t think he has ever been considered a ‘maybe he will make’ or a ‘cut price’ option. The stint in reserves has maybe given off the impression that he was somehow cast away but it was just a breather until he unfortunately got injured…to the Chooks and rugby league talent scouts, he had always been seen as a young player on a very serious trajectory.

I didn’t think you were try to bag anyone but I was curious on what metric you used to measure & compare the halves you mentioned.

I look at premierships won as the ultimate metric, so given DCE & Hynes have both won premierships while the others you named haven’t been anywhere near one means that they (DCE & Hynes) have both had more success than the others.

Add in DCEs SOO career & he moves above Hynes IMO.

Hi gentleman, been a while since I’ve posted. Cleary is definitely a top halfback but not sure he’s worth much more than what he gets. Panthers are a team of quality players and they seem to do ok without him. You can argue that he hasn’t been that great in big games, with the exception being last years gf where he clicked in the second half. Prior to that it was another average game in a big match. Personally I think that DCE is the best half going around. If we just had more balanced team like the panthers or storm he would have won another couple of titles. Harsh to compare him to Cleary and Cronk. Look what he did in a manly side that had as much talent in 2011 as the current panthers. His best attribute is his unpredictability, which drives me mad at time but keeps defences guessing.
