Bargain Halfbacks

Seems to be a few getting decent results.

Sam Walker
Brad Sneider
Keiren Foran.
Adam Sezer
Toby Sexton
Te Maire Martin

They often lack consistency, but so do many of the highest paid guys like Nico Hynes, Mitch Moses, Ben Hunt and DCE.

Is the half position over rated and over paid in the NRL?

Cronk and Cleary with their 6 rings in 7 years beg to differ.

Yeah and thats all that matters - winning the comp.

But on the other hand Hynes, Moses, SJ, Ben Hunt and DCE have been every bit as successful as Jackson Hastings, Kyle Flanagan and Tannah Boyd to name but a few.

Sam Walker next contact will be $1,000,000 plus a season and if he signs for less to stay at the Roosters not even the NRL can ignore that.

Cleary is worth the money he is on and DCE is one of the better half’s even with the occasional brain fart.

No the half position isn’t overrated.Walker won’t be a bargain halfback for much longer,Schneider has been ordinary as a backup at the Panthers,Sexton didn’t come into the Dogs side until recently and whilst their defence is first class, they can’t score points and Foran and Seizer are halves at clubs that are in the bottom three.I can’t recall the exact stat but roughly in the last 20 years there are next to ZERO premiership winners that haven’t had a rep player in their halves

Agree SW.

The rest are overpaid, non performing second rate hacks. They get paid on reputation alone and not on results.

If halves were paid on results then Cleary would be on $5million a season, and would be the only one earning anywhere near 7 figures.

The other 29 Panther players might have something to say about 1 player getting half the salary cap

Half backs and game managers are different and in different classes
If you want to succeed you pay big dollars for game managers, not a halfback

If you pay game manager salary to a halfback then you dont want to play in the GF

Most fullbacks have more impact than number sevens, attacking .

But game managers , get out the checque book baby

The chooks chased cronk over pearce and now have got townsend to partner walker.

A few player like jerome hughes offer a bit of both

Broncis bad, buy reynolds in the gf. Reynolds injured broncos bad
Game managers

With the speed of the game, the refs, lopsided possession rates and the 6 agains, its never been more important to keep yourself in the hunt , avoid the fatigue aand keep your head in the contest which is the new buzzword.

Fair dinkum some teams are fatigued after 6 minutes if you listen to fox

Walker is not a bargain halfback now, let alone soon. He was poached from the Broncos and was a highly touted junior. I think because he got dropped last year, people assume he must be cheap but the Chooks paid good money to get him and his contract was upgraded when he burst onto the scene as the best young playmaker in the game 2-3 years ago.

Foran is getting on and doesn’t cost much but he is a premiership winner and was once a top 3 half in the game. He is currently in great form and it’s a shame because we let him walk for Schuster (who doesn’t even have an nrl contract at this point) and wound up with Brooks (who has less 1/3 of Foran’s try assists, heart and competitiveness this season).

I think Sexton is just a foil for the Matt Burton show and Sneider is the next in line of a long list of fringe halfbacks that perform well in an unprecedented Penrith system. Also worth noting that when Luai (a SOO half) has been missing, Penrith lose and Sneider is poor.

As for Sezer and Martin, well their respective sides are currently out of the running for the top 8.

Further, consider last week without DCE, we fail to score a single point in 80 minutes. Last night he laid on a brilliant try within five minutes of kick off. I also can’t see a single player (maybe Sam Walker) on your list kicking that field goal under pressure like Chez did last night.

Walker is a bargain halfback for the Roosters,by comparison to the 3 halfbacks that play for the teams ahead of them on the ladder and the Roosters are arguably in better form than those three. He’s also on less $$ than Hunt,DCE,Cody Walker,Moses and Burton

Cleary is indeed massively underpaid...a victim of the socialist like salary cap distribution.

His next contract will be $1m + so no longer a bargain.

In what way?

Hastings, Flanagan & Boyd haven’t been part of a premiership winning team (Neither have Moses, Hunt & SJ) so I don’t see how you can say DCE & Hynes haven’t been more successful than them all?
