HAVING unearthed a bowling star during its Ashes thumping of England, Australia will not be taking Stuart Clark to the World Cup in the Caribbean next month.

Clark was left out of the defending world champion's 15-man party, with selectors going for the raw pace of South Australia's Shaun Tait, Queensland's Mitchell Johnson and the experience of New South Wales pair Brett Lee and Glenn McGrath.

Clark was dumped from the tri-series finals loss to England, a limited-overs series that Australia lost 2-0, the beleaguered tourists negating the need for a third final with a fine return to form just ahead of its own World Cup campaign.

He instead played in the Pura Cup for New South Wales, and took 10 wickets in the match for 94 as he hoisted the Blues to the top of the table.

But it wasn’t enough to persuade Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of Australia's selection panel, that he was worth a place in the World Cup squad.

Blues left-arm paceman Nathan Bracken will make the trip, with all rounder Shane Watson included, too.

Watson will act as cover for Andrew Symonds, who travels despite still recovering from a ruptured right biceps muscle, which was only recently re-attached to his shoulder.

Symonds suffered the injury in Australia's heavy 92-run loss to England in their final tri-series group phase clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia received special dispensation from the International Cricket Council to include Symonds in its squad, and will have the option of drafting in another player should the Queensland all rounder not recover in time for the super eight stage of the World Cup.

Australia also included wicketkeeper Brad Haddin as cover for Adam Gilchrist, who will miss the start of the World Cup as he waits with wife Mel for the birth of their first child.

England, who left Australia for the UK with the Commonwealth Bank Trophy yesterday, will announce its squad late tomorrow or early on Thursday (AEDT).

why cant people understand this is a one day game - clark is far less potent as his wickets are often edges taken at slip, this now becomes 4 runs in the different arena.

he went for 5.5, 0.7 runs per over worse than johnson/lee/braken/tait and an average around 30 compared to 25 for the others in the tri series.

he is a good bowler but far more suited to the test format

he may well be, but he will need to improve a lot as mcgrath's key was going for 3.5 an over, not 5.5 like clark.

Interestinly Tait bowled 8.3 over, 4/32 yesterday and tore the queens a new one. Clon would have dropped him due to the 12 wides and 1 no ball.
