Are we asleep ... or just have no where to go ..

CHN out of our price range as he was looking for a contract this year. Ryan James plays the position we have the most strength/depth in.
Yeah I know Will ,but I was thinking of a cover for Thommo when he goes, but surely we have some money. Where is our war chest . Bozo,s point was right, who do we buy. We dont know who we need or want till someone gets injured

My intention was not to criticise ... but simply to come to terms with the fact that we are not in the player market .... with the exception of Thommo ... any one else we move on is likely to be chump change and replaced with bargains ....

Unless something unusual happens like a guilty verdict on Fainu, or someone wants to break their contract ..... or someone gets too keen at school promotions, ... or someone has a row with their missus ... or someone gets in a blue at the pub .... or someone films themselves drinking their own urine ... or someone does drugs ..... but seriously, what are the chances of that happening ...

As far as Thommo goes I'm certain Des has a plan for next year and it almost certainly involves JetSki, Duck and Guacamole (Personally hoping for Guac but Des knows best). We are in a tight spot salary cap wise with Chez, Turbo, Jurbo soaking up a large %. We cannot afford to be panic buying because we aren't as high on the table as we'd like to be. Des will take his time and ensure we get the right player in the right position at the right time.

We can't have big recruits in every position and I am not really concerned that we don't have a big signing to replace Joel.

I hope that one of our current players will step up, but the jury is still out - no obvious replacements at this point.

We replaced Ben Kennedy with some reserve grader called Glenn Stewart and that turned out okay...

@simon64
Apart from Thommo leaving ... who is is likely to leave .... have we NO room to recruit without convincing a few contracted players to leave ....??
As far as I know, from our current squad Elliot, Levi, Waddell, T-Rex are only signed to 2020 and haven't been renewed. One would think, along with Thommo going, we must have some room to go to market...

It’s just a different strategy to other clubs.

It’s really no different to how the Storm managed their cap when they had Smith, Cronk and Slater on their (first set of) books. We have gone hard on 3 marquee players - Jake, Tom, DCE - and there are a few on very good coin too in Marty and AFB. We are bringing through some youth and have role players to supplement the marquee players.

Thompson’s money is handy but $400k goes pretty quickly when you need to upgrade a couple of players and try and keep youngsters from being snatched by other clubs that are just as desperate for success.

The Raiders have money because Cotric, Bateman and Leilua are leaving or left and they are/were on good money. So it’s no surprise at all that they are active in the market.

Likewise, if we are to be active in the market for decent players, we are going to have to lose more than just Thommo.

Yeah, but none of them are on big bucks ... and if the 4 leave ... we have to replace them with 4 new players ... so no room for a big signing ... just 4 more bargains .... out of that lot probably only T-Rex and Elliot will go ...

The thing is you still have to sign players to replace them. The 5 players you have there might be on $1m between them, which is only $200k per player. Throw in an upgrade to the Turbos and some others and it might be that there is only $150k for each of the 5 players you need to bring in.

Unless we see some of our top players leave (and I am not talking about the 3 marquees), we will be tinkering at the edges Of our squad for some time to come I reckon.

I don’t think the recruitment team is asleep at the wheel, what they have in front of them is some tough calls, the balance of experience and youth.

Two more development squad players for 2021 in S. Fainu and Tuitavake, both have good ability.

What they do with Andersen and Miski will be interesting.

In the 30,

* a call on T-Rex will need to be made, have some good depth in the front row already. Maybe he goes back to the left edge as a backrower.

* Sam Smith done Morgan Harper in.

* a few off contract in the 30, Albert, Levi, Waddell and Elliot off to the UK.

Positions we look short are wing and hooker.

Titmus and Saddler will be pushing to make the top 30 squad for 2021, I wouldn’t be surprised if the club release Sipley also due to the overwhelming ability in the front row.

Pleased too see manly juniors pushing to be in the 30.

Who do you want to go out and Buy ?
Farnworth, Saab... many others. CHN wouldve potentially turned us into a premiership side, we are only a good signing or two off that. We need a strong 1-13 which means a strong winger and 2row, or at least one of the two.

We arent asking for marquee signinns.., CHN could be out of price range, agreed. But a couple 300k+ players surely isnt out of the question if we trim the fat a bit... and i mean cut elliott, boyle, croker, waddell/sipley, thommo leaving... replaced with youth who are already contracted on minimum deals and a couple 300k starters surely isnt a hard ask?

We are pretty lucky to have a gun 5-6 players, but it seems our list management isnt as good as some other clubs

You have mentioned 3 kids that are highly touted, they are all getting offers on potential. We need to look after our own back yard before paying overs to lure players like this.

I wouldnt say CHN or Farnworth are getting offers just on potential, especially the former.

CHN has represented NZ three times and dominated in Maori all stars and has dominated teams in the NRL for a couple years now... he isn’t a bloke who debuted this year, and has been about Canterbury’s only consistently good player bar maybe hoppa. Imagine how good he’d have gone in a good side like manly outside DCE rather than Jack Cogger or Lachlan Lewis.

Farnworth has played extremely well every game hes been in. Not a huge sample size but again its not hard for Farnworth to show he is an upgrade on our current wingers, he also wouldn’t break the bank so I don’t see what is wrong with suggesting him as a signing.

Also our backyard is already taken care of in my eyes... Cust, Schuster re signed and more. Albert has a home here but again Dogs will likely offer overs so out of our hands.

Time to trim the fat and snag a good winger that doesn’t break the bank. CHN was probably out of our ballpark but the wingers suggested arent... let Schuster and Guaca compete for Thommos role next year

I think our backyard will continue to prosper, what the Fulton's have done is sensational with the addition of the Blacktown workers, been a decade since we have had the talent we do now in the system.

The club need to retain as many as they can to set the precedent if you excel through the juniors we will give you every chance to make it.

We are very heavy with the forward talent and I agree with you wing is a spot that needs improving and maybe picking up a winger is an option.

Not sure why Sipley seems to be ‘persona non grata’????? He’s young (25)....was playing great before injured. For mine he’s better than Boyle, Keppie, Paseka yet he can’t get a crack lately! Same with Olakau’atu.....better than Gosiewski & Waddell yet can’t get a game. Frustrates me that players like Sipley & Olakau’atu will go elsewhere & kill it whilst we keep powder puffs!

i like sipley as well. Just think the 4 props named are ahead of him. I think Sipley is much better than Boyle too... the point I was making that with those 4 props we dont need many more experienced props considering we have titmuss, saddler and young s.fainu coming through who would all be on minimum contracts.

Maybe keep one of sipley / boyle assuming theyre on around 150-200k which is more than the cheap boys... but don't need both. Good to give the young kids a go and it is also more affordable which can help us put money towards other positions (the difference between a 350k and 250k winger is probably pretty significant)

Good points, well thought out. I just don't see any value in adding a $300k winger when we already have Jorge, Garrick, Funa, Miski and Anderson under contract.
