We have knowledgeable posters on this Forum talking about ‘Middle’ players, specialist left and right centres (Heaven forbid if they stray to the other side if they see a gap), touch downs, red zones, D, scripted moves…. We have shot clocks, more-and-more officials, technology, statistics to tell us uninformed swill who played well and who didn’t, the Bunker…

And we have mid-season transfers; the latest American blight on our sport. I don’t like players moving from one team one week to another club the next week.

Yes, I’m a dinosaur, but I don’t like the way our sport is heading.

And answer me this, not footy related, why hasn't the USA ever had great bands like the UK.

I mean what is the biggest band out of America? I am thinking The Eagles, Aerosmith or REM. I could name 20 bigger bands from the UK eg Beatles, Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd to name a few.

I consider it to be highly likely that it is the same media types running the NFL entertainment that would be somewhere in the deep background advising the media types running the National RIGby League entertainment on how it is all done.......YES I want my SPORT back too!

I recall the ref awarding a touchdown to the Broncos against manly in the 90s when kerrod Walters "spiked" the ball over the line with clear separation.

Also Maloney's quarterback pass in the 2013 grand final.

To be fair you could hardly say mid season transfers are an "american thing"

Look at football, they have a transfer window in the middle of the season

For me I have no problem with it, Id rather see a player like Elijah Taylor playing then squandering in reserves

What I don't like is players being able to sign for another club so far in advance
Should all be dealt with after the grand final

This then avoids the Paulo and Sims situations

You are correct.
For me the two best US bands were The Beach Boys and Chicago. Nothing compares to the plethora of English Bands including my moniker.
Oz has produced some good'uns, such as The Easybeats, INXS, Masters Apprentices, Little River Band and ACDC.
Much more fun than discussing Barrett's selections, isn't it?

Agree with some of what you're saying TW, but IMO a lot of those 'buzzwords' are just that, created by the media. While teams do have centres that are usually either left side or right side, I don't think it's anymore specialised than when we had inside and outside centres. Most teams had a centre who played inside and one that played outside. Michael O'Connor usually played outside centre. Didn't mean he couldn't play inside, just that he usually didn't. Likewise, Matai usually plays left centre. Doesn't mean he couldn't play right centre just that he usually doesn't.

Scripted moves have been around for decades, but there does seem to be lack of 'play what's in front of you' instinct today compared to years gone by. The beauty of players like Cliffy Lyons and Phil Blake was they didn't even know what they were going to do until they did it, so the opposition obviously had no idea!

I'm an NFL fan and the play clock is an integral part of that game, however I don't see what it adds in League, apart maybe for shots at goal. The shot clock for scrums is a joke. If a team's delaying setting the scrum, penalise them. They won't do it again.

With regards to the number of officials, I was a fan of one ref, two touch judges and two in-goal judges. There will be mistakes, but we just need to accept those and ask the broadcasters not to replay everything down to the finest detail.

Finally, with mid season transfers, they're actually quite rare in NFL. It's more of a soccer thing where all the major competitions around the world have a mid season transfer window. TBH, it doesn't really worry me. If one club has a player surplus to requirements that another club could give an opportunity to, so be it. Benefits both clubs and the player as far as I can see.

I agree the influence is becoming insidious. I think I even saw a report recently that a parra player wanted to play in the NFL? He even bought a 49ers jersey ffs

You and I agree that we may be a dinosaur and don't like how our sport is heading however mid-season transfer are not just restricted to the NFL.

It happens in the EPL and all the top flight soccer clubs throughout Europe. Players can even be loaned to other clubs.

I don’t mind it per se, however what I really would like to see when it does happen is that a transfer fee has to be negotiated. Clubs who care to develop their juniors get reimbursed for the investment that they make in a young player coming through the ranks and are lost to a rival clubs.

The one I hate the most is the use of the letter "D" in place of the word "defence". How lazy is that?

What's worse is the first time I heard it was during a post-match press conference from Des Hasler and Jamie Lyon. I remember thinking how stupid they sounded at the time.

Ffs we're only talking about one syllable. It's as if they've forgotten they are speaking and are trying to save keystrokes.

Easybeats were all migrants - not necessarily POMS: Singer Stevie Wright and drummer Gordon "Snowy" Fleet were from England; rhythm guitarist George Young was from Scotland; lead guitarist Harry Vanda and bassist Dick Diamonde were from the Netherlands.
However, I take your point. Their musical roots were not from Silm Dusty!
