Alfred

I’m out on another fuel and food run. Still no power, phone networks. The little Full Boar we bought in the middle of the 2023 mini cyclone/flooding. We’ve had it running 24/7 since 1am Friday. We just received an update that the power won’t be on till the 16th. Telstra not on till the 20th!
I’m only on here to do the tips. The daughter and her friend Dane are going through footy withdrawals.
Unfortunately lost two beautiful trees. And the pool fence and equipment. Not complaining. Many out here have lost their houses/sheds/livestock. A couple metres to the north for those trees and we would’ve been in a lot of trouble.

Hit me up if you need some pool equipment. New or second hand

I can't tell you through experience what a category 4 or 5 is like, however, one of my closest friends lived in Darwin when Tracy hit in 1974 and explained it as being absolutely terrifying and an experience he hopes he never has to live through again. They all sheltered in a bathroom on the bottom floor of their home and after Tracy had passed, they exited their home to see all the houses on the other side of the street 'gone', completely demolished, and yet their side of the street was relatively unscathed. Crazy!

We were at boarding school together and he asked me if I was interested in going to Darwin with him over the Easter Holidays in 1975 to help with some maintenance in Darwin, building Creche's for the children and just general repair stuff. Being a country boy (farm), I was pretty handy with a welder and building fences and that sort of crap, so I agreed. What I saw when I arrived absolutely horrified me, it was like you would imagine Hiroshima to be like after the atomic bomb. Absolutely devastating.
Also know someone who went through Cyclone Tracy and they mentioned that there seemed to be some tornado type systems within the actual cyclone and one explanation why some areas or streets were not as badly damaged as others .
In that the tornado effects in addition to the general severe winds and gales and virtually wiping most of the place out .
Also very unlucky for the city in that the cyclone did not have that wide a frontage but managed a direct hit on Darwin .
A lot of houses on high set posts apparently losing all of their top sections and just the floor and posts remaining and some houses lifted completely and knocked or forced off their stumps.
Also could hardly imagine too much more scarier experiences then having to cope with that type of very extreme weather event .

I may need to hit you up to manlyfan76. I was advised to make sure the pool pump during a cyclone is turned off so you don't get any shortages. I did as advised, then went to switch it on to release some water from the pool....guess what? It shorted out anyway.

Wow , we got ours back a few days ago now , 5 days no power. The Telstra Tower here is ****ed , but we have NBN so it’s no issue. They are saying a couple of weeks for the tower.

I know two people who separately went through Tracy
The first is a Swiss woman (18 at the time), arrived the day before and checked into a motel - during the night the owner, a mature woman came and grabbed all the guests that were still there and took them downstairs to the laundry which was partially located under a concrete stair case - thae waited it out in panic under the stairs which was basically all that was left - she is a neighbour having emigrated about 40 years ago.
The second were two SouthAfrican adventures who bought a yacht in Sumatra from an American who had been attacked by pirates and was giving up sailing. They Rex and Johann) sailed the yacht to Darwin two weeks before Tracy - the got work in Weipa and left the yavht moored in Darwin Harbour - they got Xmas off and were driving to Darwin the night before, early in the morning their old holden got blown off the road into a ditch - the army pulled them out and the arrived in Darwin late morning and were put in charge of a direction station - the boat was matchsticks.

Do you know that you can claim for Qld Gov Assistance if you have power off for 5 consecutive days??

Could be the GPO (power point)
Plug the pump directly into the power point (not chlorinator) and turn it on , see if it trips then.
If not unplug and next try the chlorinator on its own.
If not it may have dries out and is ok?

Thanks. I'll give it a go and report back 🫡
